The Certified Phlebotomy Technician II primarily performs skin puncture or venipuncture on patients of all ages for the purpose of obtaining a blood specimen for analysis in the clinical laboratory and is under the supervision of the Laboratory Director / Manager / Supervisor. This role involves various duties including computer data entry, filing, telephone communication, and other clerical tasks. The technician must possess adequate knowledge of laboratory test terminology and demonstrate good communication skills and telephone etiquette. They will collect specimens from newborns to geriatric patients, process various types of specimens (microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank), and process specimens for referral to reference laboratories. Additionally, the role includes stocking and ordering routine supplies, maintaining cleanliness of storage areas and equipment, and processing or loading specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation. Depending on needs, the technician may also assist with sample pick-up, sorting, pathology assistance, inventory, replenishing and ordering supplies, mail handling, faxing, answering phones, and managing product deliveries. The position may also involve working in multiple departments or on night/graveyard shifts, and performing point-of-care testing after training and documented competency. Other tasks may be assigned by management.
