About The Position

The Certified Phlebotomy Technician I primarily performs skin puncture or venipuncture on patients of all ages for the purpose of obtaining a blood specimen for analysis in the clinical laboratory. This role is under the supervision of the Laboratory Director / Manager / Supervisor. Responsibilities include computer data entry, filing, telephone communication, and other clerical duties. The technician must possess adequate knowledge of laboratory test terminology, demonstrate good communication skills and telephone etiquette, and exhibit proper phlebotomy techniques and equipment usage for all age groups. Processing of various specimen types (microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, blood bank) and specimens for referral to reference laboratories is required. The role also involves stocking routine supplies, maintaining cleanliness of storage areas and equipment, and processing or loading specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation. Additional duties may include assisting with sample pick-up, sorting samples, assisting pathology, inventory management, ordering supplies, mail handling, faxing, answering phones, and managing product deliveries. Other tasks may be assigned by the department manager/director.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, or equivalent, required.
  • BLS certification within 45 days of hire and maintained current, according to hospital requirement.

Nice To Haves

  • Current and valid state certification preferred.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of clinical laboratory experience, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers, and work areas.
  • Process or load specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation.
  • Assist with sample pick-up at hospital/OR.
  • Assist lab specialty in sorting samples for analysis and putting away samples.
  • Assist pathology.
  • Manage inventory.
  • Replenish supplies.
  • Order supplies.
  • Handle mail pick-up/delivery.
  • Faxing.
  • Answering the phone.
  • Manage product deliveries.
  • Perform other tasks or responsibilities as assigned by the department manager/director.
