Requirements

  • Certified Phlebotomist
  • Under general supervision, performs blood collection procedures, including venipuncture, skin puncture and special collection procedures.
  • Accurately collects, labels, receives, and distributes laboratory specimens, maintains records, and ensures specimen integrity.
  • Performs all duties with attention to safety, quality, and sensitivity to the age and developmental needs of the patient population(s) served.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a wide range of phlebotomy procedures including venipuncture, capillary puncture, and special collection procedures; and uses proper technique in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Maintains phlebotomy trays, carts, and collection areas in clean, sanitary, and properly stocked conditions.
  • Accurately logs specimen collection information in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) or designated logs. Performs pre-analytical specimen processes.
  • Collects, transports, labels and distributes patient specimens while maintaining specimen integrity and proper handling procedures.
  • Performs routine operational and support duties such as stocking supplies, discarding expired materials, and maintaining organized work areas.
  • Verifies specimen identification, assesses appropriateness of test orders and quality of specimen by recognizing factors that affect procedures and results; and takes appropriate action when corrections are indicated.
  • Identifies patients and patient samples by strict adherence to established procedures and use of two patient identifiers; and labels samples accurately and completely.
  • Attends to routine administrative functions including recordkeeping, completion of requisitions, and maintenance of collection documentation.
