About The Position

Performs a variety of venipuncture techniques and collects and processes blood specimens from patients in support of laboratory procedures used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Provides guidance and training to subordinate phlebotomist.

Requirements

  • Meet the educational and experience requirements for certification as a phlebotomist by a nationally recognized board/agency.
  • Current phlebotomist certification from a nationally recognized board/agency: ASCP; or CVAS-Certified Venous Access Specialist; or ASPT-American Society Phlebotomist Technician; or NHA-National Healthcareer Association; or NCCT-Phlebotomy National Center for Competency Testing; or ACA-American Certification Agency for Healthcare Professionals; or Medical2; or NPA-National Phlebotomy Association; or Phlebotomy Technician from MedCA, or Becksford, or AMT-American Medical Technologists, or NPS-National Performance Specialist certifications

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of routine blood drawing procedures, using standard equipment such as vacutainer tubes and sleeves, tourniquets, syringes, and butterfly needles.
  • Confers with patient to obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, allay fears, and elicit cooperation.
  • Prepares, processes, labels, and stores patient specimens and samples according to established procedures.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies; stocks supplies on carts and hand trays.
  • Performs quality control procedures to maintain compliance with applicable regulations; trains and mentors subordinate staff.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards and practices.
