About The Position

Collect blood from patients in a hospital or similar facility following established standards and practices. Assume responsibility for the safety and comfort of the patient during the venipuncture process. Check the quality of patient samples. This role primarily interacts with administration, physicians, employees, clinical and non-clinical departments, patients, visitors, and volunteers.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Phlebotomy certification required
  • Must be committed to quality and patient safety at all times.
  • Excellent command / highly proficient in spoken and written English.
  • Basic computer skills, including but not limited to: Microsoft Office, information security, electronic medical documentation, and email.
  • Must be effective at adjusting to change, prioritizing duties, handling stress and effectively communicating face-to-face and/or over the telephone.
  • Must be able to work independently, and flexibly, and as a part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Must be able to manage several interruptions throughout the shift.
  • Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills, verbal and written.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain established departmental policies and procedures, objective, process improvement program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Centrifuge blood specimens in test tubes to separate cells from blood serum and plasma. Check quality of specimen.
  • Maintain inventory on the phlebotomy tray. Also, keep tray in a neat, working condition.
  • Maintain inventory in the Outpatient Phlebotomy Room. Also, keep room in a neat working condition.
  • Collect blood from patient (capillary and venipuncture), process patient’s samples, prepare worksheets when needed, and enter required data into the LIS.
  • Monitor Collection Pools in LIS for needed blood draws.
  • Collect blood from patients at remote sites: convalescent centers, physician clinics, etc.
  • Maintain required records, reports and statistics as directed.
  • Follow proper protocol for Medical Necessity and presentation of Advanced Beneficiary Notice.
  • Maintain good relations with patients, medical staff and other departments as well as clients that use our services.
  • Participate in educational programs and in-service meetings.
  • Request supplies as necessary to maintain phlebotomy inventory.
  • Provide exemplary customer service.
  • Maintain confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA.
  • Cooperate with other personnel to achieve departmental objectives and maintain good employee relations, inter-departmental objectives and infection control policies.
  • Cordially demonstrate timeliness and professionalism in appearance, communications, and actions during all interactions and with all individuals and entities.
  • Solve practical problems, dealing with a variety of issues, and interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written and oral form.
  • Attend meetings as required.
