A Pharmacy Technician is responsible for assisting the pharmacist as dictated by the Alabama Board of Pharmacy to provide medications safely and efficiently to our patients. This role involves accurately and efficiently stocking and maintaining automated dispensing cabinets (Pyxis), maintaining and rotating pharmacy inventory, preparing medications for cart fill, first doses, and Pyxis restocks, and packaging medications for unit dose use. Responsibilities also include handling narcotics for Pyxis restocks, competently answering telephone calls to the pharmacy, and assisting the pharmacist as needed. Other duties may include helping other staff members to complete tasks. Specific technicians may be assigned to sterile IV compounding per USP 797 guidelines, maintaining annual competencies for USP 797, restocking and maintaining Anesthesia Carts, and assisting OR and Anesthesia staff with medication needs. Some technicians may also be responsible for interviewing patients and compiling home medication lists for Emergency Department Med Rec.
