Assists licensed pharmacists in technical duties related to medication preparation and distribution. This role involves accurately selecting, preparing, and labeling medications, including hazardous drugs and controlled substances. The technician will also screen phone calls, assist with medication distribution, and manage pharmacy procurement, inventory control, and outdate checking. Responsibilities may include completing documentation for controlled substances, performing nonsterile compounding, and sterile IV admixture following USP standards and aseptic technique. The role also involves inspecting medication storage areas, completing medication admission histories, and accepting additional duties as assigned. Participation in quality improvement initiatives and training of other technicians may also be required. The technician will support area leaders, handle patient demographic information, perform data entry, verify insurance, generate labels, and perform cashiering. Competence in third-party billing functions is necessary, along with the ability to provide age-appropriate patient care. In some cases, the technician may obtain immunization certification and perform immunizations under pharmacist supervision or operate a vehicle to deliver medications and supplies.
