Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Up to 1 year Pharmacy experience is required.
  • National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) is required.
  • Approved National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) certification through Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PCTB) and/or ExCPT Certification by the National Healthcareer Association is required upon start.
  • Must be registered with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy as a Certified Pharmacy Technician is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's degree, bachelor's degree and/or approved technical, professional, or vocational program (Preferred)
  • 1 - 2 years Pharmacy; previous experience with computer applications and pharmacy automation is preferred is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Supports pharmacists in the preparation and distribution of medications by performing a variety of technical tasks in accordance with department protocols and regulatory standards.
  • Demonstrates competency through regular audits, observational checklists, and performance rounding.
  • Accurately selects, counts, compounds (non-sterile), packages, scans, labels, fills, and delivers medications in compliance with departmental guidelines.
  • Performs non-sterile compounding, including weighing, measuring, and mixing of ingredients using proper calculations, equipment, and technique, ensuring accuracy and safety.
  • Proficient in signing into automated dispensing machines, loading, refilling, unloading, managing expirations, and resolving discrepancies.
  • Accurately and efficiently fills medication orders and emergency supplies in a timely manner.
  • Ensures timely and accurate delivery of medications via tubing, cart runs, IV runs, and STAT deliveries. Verifies correct delivery location and proper storage.
  • Completes other assigned tasks as directed to support patient care and department/organization success.
  • Responsible for inventory control through proper removal of medications from automation, stock rotation, removal of expired medications, reordering/stocking of medications/supplies when stock is low, and packaging/assembling medications for future dispensing.
  • Ensures safe storage of medications.
  • Verifies quantity on hand (QOH) and adjusts inventory records as necessary; promptly reports discrepancies to the on-site buyer.
  • Updates Omnicell with the correct quantity and earliest expiration date when inventory counts are incorrect, and escalates significant discrepancies to the buyer.
  • Notifies the buyer of increased usage trends in medications or supplies.
  • Identifies medications frequently expiring and recommends PAR level adjustments to the buyer for evaluation.
  • Ensures proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and follows safety protocols when handling hazardous medications.
  • Maintains accurate inventory of controlled substances (CII–CV), including documentation and reconciliation of records. Immediately reports unresolved controlled substance discrepancies to a supervisor.
  • Adheres to departmental standards and ensures the effective use of pharmacy automation and electronic systems.
  • Follows established departmental policies, standard operating procedures, and workflows.
  • Maintains pharmacy automation systems by performing routine tasks such as changing consumables and cleaning equipment.
  • Identifies, troubleshoots, and reports issues related to pharmacy automation in a timely manner.
  • Accesses patient information, processes pharmacy messages from the in-basket, and prints medication labels using the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.
  • Communicates professionally and respectfully with pharmacists, nurses, physicians, patients, and other healthcare team members in person, over the phone, and in writing.
  • Effectively manages and triages requests, ensuring timely and appropriate follow-up.
  • Escalates complex or unresolved issues to the on-duty pharmacist or pharmacy leadership.
  • Reports errors promptly, maintains accurate documentation, and contributes to the development of corrective action plans.
