About The Position

The Certified Permit Technician position is responsible for assisting in the overall daily operations of the Building Team within the Building Department, which is a division of Community Development, including Planning. This role acts as a receptionist, answers and routes phone calls, creates daily schedules for building inspection requests, takes and relays messages, provides information to citizens and guests, responds to general questions related to department functions, and submits various reports to the State and other agencies. The position also provides administrative and event support to Community Development. The technician is responsible for tracking all permits through the entire permitting process, from application acceptance, plan review, inspections, to permit closure. This includes establishing and maintaining systems for organizing files, letters, reference manuals, field inspection reports, permit files, blueprints, drawings, and other data. A key aspect of the role is working collaboratively with plan examiners and inspectors to enhance customer service. The position involves operating a personal computer with various software applications for word processing, records maintenance, and data input. Additionally, the technician prepares Department purchase orders for supplies and materials, processes invoices, verifies their accuracy, and submits them for payment. The role requires excellent customer service, communication, time management, organization, telephone and computer skills, attention to detail, and people skills. The candidate must be capable of performing multi-task operations with frequent interruptions. The Certified Building Permit Technician role is distinguished by the incumbent's knowledge of internal and external public agency permitting requirements and responsibility for assignments with greater complexity and requiring more independent judgment.
