About The Position

Skills of Central PA is seeking a Certified Peer Specialist to work in State College with individuals receiving services through their Peer Support Services program. This role involves providing specialized therapeutic interactions by a certified individual who has personal experience with behavioral health services. The goal is to offer support and assistance in recovery and community integration, inspiring hope and promoting empowerment, self-determination, understanding, coping skills, and resiliency. The Certified Peer Specialist will mentor individuals, provide service coordination, and help those with severe and persistent mental illness and co-occurring disorders achieve personal wellness and cope with stressors and barriers. Key responsibilities include developing Wellness Recovery Action Plans (WRAP) focusing on personal goals, crisis planning, and relapse prevention, as well as assisting participants in developing and implementing person-centered Individual Recovery Plans (IRP). The role also involves facilitating peer support groups aligned with IRP goals.

Requirements

  • A CPS is a self-identified individual who has received or is receiving state priority group services as defined in Mental Health Bulletin OMH-94-4, Serious Mental Illness: Adult Priority group.
  • Has a high school diploma or general equivalency degree.
  • Within the last three years, has maintained at least 12 months of full-or part-time paid or voluntary work experience or obtained at least 24 credit hours of post-secondary education.
  • Has completed a peer specialist certification training curriculum approved by the Department.
  • At least 12 months volunteer or documented paid experience in the Mental Health Field (both need to be verifiable) in order to be accepted into the CPS Certification program (for those not yet certified).
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical and drug screen required.
  • Valid PA Driver's License required (must be maintained along with a good driving record).

Responsibilities

  • Develop Wellness Recovery Action Plans (WRAP) with participants focusing on strategies for reaching personal goals, crisis planning, and relapse prevention.
  • Assist individuals to develop and implement a person-centered Individual Recovery Plan (IRP).
  • Facilitate peer support groups based on Individual Recovery Plan (IRP) goals.
  • Provide mentoring and service coordination supports.
  • Offer support and assistance in recovery and community-integration process.
