About The Position

University Physicians' Association is looking for a full-time Certified Ophthalmic Technician for UT Neuro Ophthalmology, located within the UT Medical Center. Under the direct supervision of the Ophthalmologist, the Ophthalmic Technician provides a variety of preliminary ocular assessment activities, including but not limited to, obtaining a complete and accurate medical history, visual acuity and stereo testing, lensometry, motility, applanation tonometry, pupil dilation, potential acuity meter testing and, and manifest refraction/auto-refractometry. Increasingly complex patient procedures may also be assigned as determined by level of proficiency and experience.

Requirements

High School diploma required
Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (Required)
Two years of ophthalmic experience
Proven record of attention to detail, ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
Must be able to effectively communicate both in writing and orally
Broad knowledge base of ophthalmic terminology

Responsibilities

Provides assistance to the physician with examination procedures and other patient care activities as requested.
Oversees the efficient flow of patients through the eye clinic, assuring that resources are sufficient for scheduled patients and that they are directed appropriately.
When appropriate, performs lensometry, including reading lenses with multifocal and progressive adds, power of sphere, axis of cylinder power and orientation of prism.
Performs HVF, OCT, Color plates, and intraocular pressure assessments through the use of applanation tonometry/tonopen.
Obtains prior authorizations and schedules MRI’s/CT’s/ Lumbar punctures per provider orders
Utilize administrative time to support front desk tasks such as scheduling referrals, and scheduling in general.
Obtaining genetic testing sample (cheek swab) on patients per providers discretion
Securing prior authorizations for Botox/medication refills
Instills dilating drops (and other ophthalmic drops) per physician's instructions.
Interacts and communicates in a professional manner with fellow employees, medical staff and other health team professionals.
Ensures that exam rooms are stocked with appropriate instruments, as well as patient handouts, & any other equipment/materials, as required by physicians.
Formulates and maintains effective working relationships with peers, managers and other members of the health care team.
Receives constructive feedback in a positive self-develop-mental manner.
Functions as an effective team member.
Demonstrate adaptability, flexibility, and accountability when changes are made in job description and responsibility, including performing all qualified duties throughout other areas of the hospital.
