The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) will assist the Occupational Therapist in planning, developing, organizing, evaluating, and directing occupational therapy activities. This role involves facilitating Telehealth services, communicating with other departments, maintaining therapy standards, and interpreting procedures to staff, residents, and families. The COTA will also participate in care conferences, discharge planning, and resident assessments, and assist in instructing residents and family members on home programs and adaptive equipment. Accurate documentation and timely billing for services rendered are crucial. The position also involves performing administrative duties, reporting concerns to supervisors, and interviewing residents to evaluate daily living skills. The COTA will address goals in the Plan of Care, determine appropriate treatment, schedule services, and prepare necessary equipment. They will also assist in transporting residents, demonstrating procedures, performing therapy in resident rooms, reassuring residents, and preparing them for treatment. Adapting equipment, promoting participation in activities, and recommending modifications to treatment plans are also key responsibilities. Ensuring notes are informative and descriptive, and providing individualized occupational therapy services are essential. The role also includes participating in staff development programs, in-service education, and on-the-job training, as well as attending workshops and seminars to stay current in the field. Adherence to safety standards, departmental policies, and infection control procedures is mandatory. The COTA will also manage necessary materials and equipment, report needs to supervisors, and utilize equipment efficiently and safely. Honoring resident rights, including refusal of treatment, and abiding by participation in treatment decisions are paramount. The COTA must inform residents of consequences for not participating in therapy and document such actions. Resident complaints and grievances must be reported to the supervisor, and residents should be allowed to participate in treatment planning and scheduling. Adherence to HIPAA requirements and reporting medical concerns are also required.
