Under the supervision of the Occupational Therapist, the Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) assists in the evaluation and development of the rehabilitative plan of care and in periodic re-evaluation as indicated. This role involves performing routine strengthening and therapeutic exercises, teaching exercise programs to clients and families, and writing daily progress notes. The COTA also confirms weekly visit schedules with the Supervisor/DON, consults with the Therapist regarding home visit outcomes, and reports physical findings in written form. Additionally, the COTA assists clients in using self-help devices, participates in therapy and other in-service programs, and attends rehabilitation department staff meetings and case conferences. The role may involve assuming other duties deemed appropriate and necessary by the supervising Occupational Therapist and requires effective communication with all care providers. The COTA must also notify the agency of absences due to illness, emergency leave, normal vacation periods, or special professional meetings.
