The Certified Nursing Assistant or Patient Care Assistant (PCA) functions as a member of the patient care team, under the direction of the Registered Nurse (RN). The role involves proficiently and consistently performing all aspects of the PCA role, supporting the RN with clinical tasks such as blood glucose monitoring, completing EKGs, applying simple dressings using aseptic technique, and responding to medical emergencies with Heartsaver CPR and AED skills. The PCA is also responsible for responding to the needs of patients and family members and actively contributing to the efficient operation of the unit, ensuring the practice of the Patient and Family Centered Care Model in an environment that exemplifies best practice.
