About The Position

This role is for a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital, Inc. within the Mass General Brigham system. The CNA will support the Patient Care Team by performing secretarial duties and coordinating unit operations to ensure efficient and professional patient care. Responsibilities include answering phones, collaborating with healthcare team members, scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, coordinating patient admissions, transfers, and discharges, and responding to the needs of patients and their families. The position requires the ability to provide indirect patient and family-centered care appropriate to the age of the patients served. The CNA will also assist in maintaining a safe environment, ordering supplies, managing unit-based needs, and acting as a liaison with ancillary services. Clerical duties include managing phone calls, participating in shift hand-offs, maintaining patient records, scheduling diagnostic tests, coordinating discharge logistics, and utilizing various hospital systems like Meditech and bed management systems. The role also involves patient/family education, cross-training, and participating in quality improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required
  • Certified Nursing Assistant or current Nursing Student who has completed Fundamentals of Nursing or equivalent med/surgical clinical rotation.
  • Successful completion of an approved nursing assistant training program.
  • Ability to effectively speak, read and write using the English language.
  • Ability to pass clinical competency, basic math and reading testing.
  • Ability to perform basic math calculations and measurements, in order to measure height and weight, intake and output and calorie counts.
  • Ability to accurately interpret and utilize basic medical terminology and abbreviations.
  • Ability to enter and retrieve computerized information.
  • Physical ability to push, transfer, and pull heavy loads throughout assigned shift.
  • Physical ability to meet core job requirements in accordance with practice setting demands, for the patient populations regularly served.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to interact appropriately with nursing staff, patients, families/visitors, physicians, and other hospital staff.
  • Organizational skills to set priorities and efficiently complete assigned work.
  • Ability to manage stress related to patient care issues, and changing hospital climate and personnel issues.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant/Patient Care Technician [CNA/PCT] - Data Conversion - Various Issuers required
  • HeartSaver CPR AED - American Heart Association (AHA) required

Responsibilities

  • Perform a wide range of secretarial duties and coordinate unit/floor procedures to ensure professional and efficient operation of the department in providing quality patient care.
  • Answer unit phones, collaborate with health care team members and other departments, schedule patient tests and appointments.
  • Maintain all medical records, initiate and track unit requests, coordinate discharges, transfers, and admissions proactively.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide indirect patient family centered care appropriate to the age of the patients served on assigned unit.
  • Receive visitors and respond to needs of patients and family members.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe environment and intervene appropriately.
  • Ensure patient and family member’s needs and expectations are met in a timely and caring manner.

  • Utilize the proper procedures to address patient or family’s concerns by notifying the Nursing Director/supervisor or clinical leader.
  • Order, expedite and distribute unit, clerical and patient care supplies as directed by the Nursing Director to assure par levels required for efficient operations.
  • Order supplies (including Workflow One) necessary for the unit as described by the Nursing Director through eBUY.
  • Maintain work area and office equipment in neat and functioning order.
  • Initiate and track appropriate Facilities, Bio Med, Housekeeping, and IT related problems/replacements/requests or work orders.
  • Notify the Biomed department of malfunctioning equipment and arrange repair requests and for the equipment to be returned to the department.
  • Assist Nursing Director to manage and facilitate unit projects.
  • Act as a liaison and assist in problem solving with ancillary services and all other departments which provide services or have an effect on unit activities.
  • Provide back-up coverage for patient transport, including escorting discharge patients/families.
  • Answer, coordinate and manage all phone calls to the unit in consultation with the charge nurse.
  • Take accurate messages and ensure their delivery to the appropriate staff in a timely and professional manner.
  • Place pages and phone calls upon request of clinical staff.
  • Participate in shift-to-shift hand off communication by giving or receiving hand of report to/from the incoming/outgoing unit secretary and charge RN.
  • Coordinate and notify appropriate staff regarding all paperwork coming onto the unit including fax referrals.
  • Maintain all patient medical records per hospital policies and procedures in a neat and orderly manner; properly label each page and file testing results and other information in individual medical records accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Schedule patient diagnostic tests, appointments, and consults upon the direction of physician or RN.
  • Coordinate logistics of patient discharge including transportation, equipment, etc.
  • Perform clerical duties to admit, transfer, and discharge patients with the use of bed management system.
  • Make certain that the patient record/chart, information plate and/or labels, personal belongings, and other pertinent information accompany the patient on transfers.
  • Enter, update or print data reports as appropriate including: Bed management system in a timely manner to reflect current unit activity, Diet order sheets ready for pick-up by food and nutrition services, Advance Care Directives and Patient Code Status in the chart each shift, Medication Reconciliation and Restraint reports and provides them to the physician or RN as a reminder to reorder restraints or update/complete medication reconciliation each shift, Quadramed assignment sheet and provides to the charge nurse prior to the beginning of each shift, Recovery charges, and or billing information as indicated.
  • Check the quadramed list by 11:30am and notify the charge nurse of any unclassified in-patients as well as reminding staff to complete their quadrameds.
  • Copy patient charts and other materials as requested.
  • Utilize Meditech system to: access and update administrative data screens, enter transport requests, enter PASSPORT orders, print specimen labels, print kardexes, print medication administration report.
  • Request and maintain old medical records as needed.
  • Anticipate discharges and transfers and call them to admitting/nursing supervisor when discharges are known and input any tentative discharges in bed management system.
  • Update charge nurse/clinical leader, admitting and nursing supervisor of admissions, discharges, and transfers on 7-3 and 3pm-11pm shifts and input any tentative discharges in bed management system.
  • Communicate with healthcare team members via VOCERA communication device.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
  • Interact with all members of health care team to provide interdisciplinary patient family centered care.
  • Answer patient call lights and communicate patient requests to appropriate clinical staff.
  • Provide clerical support to unit staff as needed.
  • Float to other pods or units as requested by Nursing office and function appropriately as reported by staff.
  • Receive and orient visitors to unit/department in a professional manner, projecting a positive public image with use of the C.A.R.E. standards.
  • Provide all patients and families with basic information for unit operation.
  • Maintain compliance with hospital, unit secretary specific competencies.
  • Identify and actively seek out unit and/or service related continuing education classes.
  • Orient or precept new personnel as assigned and act as a resource for other professionals, patients, and significant others on the unit.
  • Respond to staffing needs of the healthcare team by cross-training and floating to other units.
  • Attend staff meetings and/or read staff meeting minutes to keep current with unit and organizational updates or changes.
  • Attend the annual Safety Fair.
  • Understand unit specific quality indicators.
  • Participate in Quality Improvement Projects and Committees as directed by the Nursing Director.
  • Participate in Service, Excellence, and Quality (SEAQ) programs for example, Falls Team, Patient Safety Committee, Pain Management Team.
  • Respond to patient and family care by answering patient call lights and telephone in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate patient communication through a variety of general reception and clerical duties.
