Job Summary: Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) provide comprehensive inpatient psychiatric and medical support in accordance with military and civil service standards, delivering direct patient care, monitoring vital signs, assisting with procedures, maintaining safety and infection control, and supporting daily living activities. This position is at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas

Requirements

  • Completion of a state-approved CNA program, successfully passed state exam, and registered in the Nursing Assistant Registry whose qualifications have been examined and certified by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) or equivalent.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association or Red Cross.
  • Must maintain a current, active, valid and unrestricted/unencumbered certification or authorizing document from any U.S. state, District of Columbia or U.S. territory or jurisdiction to work as a CNA.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in the last two years in the required specialty under supervision of a Physician, LVN and/or RN.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform essentially the same duties, as those required of any military or government civil service nursing assistant of similar experience and within the skill set of accepted practice to include inpatient psychiatry.
  • Ensure accurate and timely medical documentation in compliance with BAMC policies.
  • Manually and/or electronically record all patient care activities and patient status.
  • Complete documentation within 72 hours in the patient’s medical record.
  • Verify patient identifiers for safety and accuracy.
  • Perform, monitor, and record vital signs.
  • Obtain and record patient height and weight.
  • Monitor and record intake and output (I&O).
  • Observe patients for distress or changes in condition and reports abnormalities to appropriate Physician, LVN and/or RN.
  • Assist in providing patients with basic and general information regarding self-care and therapy (i.e., activity level, diet and fluid intake, etc.) to ensure compliance with physician's orders.
  • Dispense ice water and meal trays to patients.
  • Perform a range of personal care tasks including bathing, feeding, lifting, turning, ambulating, and providing oral, hair, skin, and related hygiene care.
  • Check IV infusion sites for complications.
  • Apply and monitor hot and cold packs as prescribed.
  • Perform daily quality control checks on glucose test monitor.
  • Collect or assist in the collection of specimens such as fecal occult blood and urine.
  • Assist health care provider in examinations/procedures such as physical exams, X-rays, lumbar punctures, biopsies, PAP/Pelvic examinations etc.
  • Assist in admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.
  • Transport patients within BAMC for tests, procedures, or appointments.
  • Provide general information to patients and visitors regarding hospital policies and directions.
  • Reinforce instructions provided by professional staff.
  • Provide patients/visitors with general information regarding unit and hospital policies, directions to lab, X-ray, etc.
  • Care for patients in isolation.
  • Assist in orientation/precepting of newly assigned personnel.
  • Assist with administrative tasks.
  • Set up and stamp component parts of patients' records, file lab/X-ray slips and other documents in prescribed order.
  • Record observations and other pertinent data on appropriate records (i.e., nursing notes, I&O records, etc.).
  • Assist in the general maintenance of the unit and patient care equipment (cleans instruments, equipment, patient units and work areas; sort and stores supplies, linen, equipment; disposes of trash and soiled linen; restocks medical forms).
  • Perform other duties as assigned within skill set.
  • Report potential/actual problems to physician, LVN, or RN for appropriate action.
  • Maintain clear and effective professional communication with the healthcare team, staff, patients, and visitors.
  • Work cooperatively with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Maintain a clean patient environment.
  • Exercise the universal precautions set forth by the Centers for Disease Control when providing direct patient care and/or indirect patient care involving possible exposure to contaminated items at BAMC.
  • Observe, correct, or report potential/actual safety hazards.
  • Recognize and initiate appropriate measures in emergency situations.
  • Exercise universal precautions for infection control.
  • Abide by BAMC safety and infection control policies and procedures.
  • Rotate between performing as an Individual Care Provider (ICP) (one to one patient care), Remote Patient Safety Attendant (RPSA) (remote monitoring in Telemetry Room), or assigned to unit to assist nursing care teams.
  • Provide age-specific care based on Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) of the inpatient wards and outpatient clinics; health care provider's orders; the physical, mental and emotional needs of the patient; and the policies and procedures of BAMC.
  • Utilize comprehensive knowledge of workload requirements in conjunction with knowledge of the composition and capabilities of assigned staff, to distribute/redistribute personnel resources in response to unforeseen patient care needs.
  • Attend and participate in patient nursing reports, patient care conferences, team/unit/clinic conferences, discharge planning, and staff conferences as deemed appropriate by administrative officials.
