Requirements

  • Minimum current State of Texas Nurse Assistant Certification.
  • One year of experience working as a Certified Nurse Assistant.
  • Experience including some medical/surgical experience.
  • Awareness of the needs of geriatric residents.

Responsibilities

  • Assist residents in and out of bed and chair or wheelchair with the correct use of the transfer belt (gait belt), potentially requiring assistance from another aide or a mechanical lift.
  • Assist residents in bathing, dressing, and undressing.
  • Assist residents in using the bathroom and provide peri care, including the provision, removal, and cleaning of bedpans, urinals, and bedside commodes.
  • Take and record vital signs of residents (temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate).
  • Assist residents to the dining area for meals or provide meals in their room, including tray setup, feeding, and documenting nourishment intake.
  • Serve between-meal nourishment and record amount eaten.
  • Maintain a clean pitcher and cup with fresh water at each resident's bedside, unless contraindicated.
  • Remove soiled bedding and replace with clean linens.
  • Assist in personal grooming, such as brushing hair and teeth, and trimming fingernails and toenails.
  • Continuously monitor hygiene and assist as needed to ensure residents are clean and neat.
  • Turn and reposition residents intermittently if they are unable to do so themselves.
  • Clean equipment such as bedpans, basins, and empty catheter bags.
  • Maintain each bedside unit in a neat and orderly condition, including cleaning table surfaces and storing personal items.
  • Observe and promptly report housekeeping and maintenance needs (e.g., broken fixtures, burned-out light bulbs, soiled floors/curtains).
  • Maintain bedside care supplies, use the charge system to record supplies obtained from facility stock, and notify the charge nurse for items to be supplied by family.
  • Maintain all service areas in clean and orderly condition, which may include washing dishes, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming floors, cleaning countertops, and minor straightening of resident apartments.
  • Assist in assuring the maximum quality of life for all residents by maintaining privacy, accommodating individual preferences, promoting independence, encouraging participation in activities, and communicating respectfully.
  • Respond promptly to all call lights and keep call lights within reach of non-ambulatory residents when unattended.
  • Maintain continuous communication with the team leader, participate in reports, and communicate all changes and unusual observations concerning residents' physical and psychosocial functioning.
  • Attend unit meetings, all mandatory in-services, and optional in-services for a total of at least 12 hours annually. Outside educational offerings may substitute for optional in-service hours with proof of attendance.
  • Remove soiled personal laundry, launder, fold, and put away in residents' apartments.
  • Maintain work area and ensure the department is in compliance with OSHA safety standards.
  • Effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrate community hospitality promises towards residents, families, associates, and vendors.
