About The Position

This position involves collaborating with a multidisciplinary healthcare team to provide healthcare in inpatient and/or outpatient settings. The role requires didactic education, clinical competency, and national certification in the area of clinical practice. The Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) will manage women's health care, with a focus on pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum period, newborn care, and family planning and gynecologic needs. Practice will be within the healthcare system, involving consultation, collaborative management, or referral as indicated by patient health status. The CNM must consider interpersonal dynamics, gender, culture, ethnicity, sexual orientation, economic status, and socio-political power differentials. With advanced knowledge of nursing theory, the CNM will demonstrate medical knowledge, clinical judgment, technical competence, professionalism, interpersonal communication skills, timely and compliant documentation, and will be responsible for lifelong professional development and competency validation. Practice must align with the Standards for the Practice of Midwifery as defined by the American College of Nurse-Midwives. This is a .75 FTE (30 Hours Per Week) outpatient position at the Vanderbilt Birth Center, a freestanding birth center owned by Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The birth center supports physiologic birth and has been open for 10 years, supporting over 2900 births. The role focuses on providing care to low-risk clients and their newborns, emphasizing personalized, family-centered care planning and intensive education. Responsibilities include prenatal, intrapartum, initial newborn, and postpartum care, as well as routine gynecological care and family planning. The model is evidence-based, with carefully tracked outcomes. Most major insurance, including Medicaid, is accepted. The center is committed to addressing healthcare inequities and increasing access to community birth. Midwives are employed by Vanderbilt University Medical Center and receive clinical faculty appointments through Vanderbilt University School of Nursing, regularly precepting students. The team includes registered nurses, childbirth educators, and administrative staff.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited midwifery program and current certification from AMCB
  • Current licensure as a CNM in TN (or eligibility for licensure)
  • Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program and BLS certifications
  • Adherence to birth center policies and procedures
  • Ability to work a rotating schedule that includes nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to be within 30 minutes of the birth center when on call (if not at the center)
  • Commitment to working with a diverse group of clients and coworkers, with an emphasis on reducing healthcare disparities
  • Master's degree
  • Relevant Work Experience
  • Less than 1 year of experience

Nice To Haves

  • 2-3+ years of full-scope experience as a CNM
  • Prior community birth experience (birth center or homebirth)
  • Prior waterbirth experience
  • EHR experience (especially Epic)

Responsibilities

  • Obtains and documents a health history; performs and documents complete, system-focused, or symptom-specific physical examination, assessment and plan of care.
  • In collaboration, provides healthcare services for primary, acute and complex care of patients and manages patient's overall care, identifying expected outcomes for diagnoses.
  • Orders, performs, interprets and collects data using appropriate assessment techniques, relevant supporting diagnostic information and diagnostic procedures where indicated.
  • Forms differential diagnoses and treats acute and chronic conditions.
  • Prescribes therapeutic interventions both pharmacologic, non-pharmacologic and surgical, needed to achieve expected outcomes.
  • Utilizes evidence-based, approved practice protocols in planning and implementing care.
  • Initiates appropriate referrals and consultations.
  • Provides specialty specific consultation services upon request and within specialty scope of practice.
  • Facilitates the patient’s transition between and within health care settings, such as admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.
  • Manages women's health care, focusing particularly on pregnancy, childbirth, the post-partum period, care of the newborn, and the family planning and gynecologic needs of women.
  • Practice within the health care system and perform consultation, collaborative management, or referral, as indicated by the health status of the patient.
  • Considers the interpersonal, inter-relationship of gender, culture, ethnicity, sexual orientation, economic status and socio-political power differentials.
  • Demonstrates medical knowledge, clinical judgment, technical competence, professionalism, interpersonal communication skills, timely and compliant documentation, and is responsibility for life-long professional development and competency validation.
  • Practice in accord with the Standards for the Practice of Midwifery, as defined by the American College of Nurse-Midwives.
  • Participates in ongoing quality improvement initiatives at the center and professional development activities.
