Job Summary: Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) provide comprehensive inpatient psychiatric and medical support in accordance with military and civil service standards, delivering direct patient care, monitoring vital signs, assisting with procedures, maintaining safety and infection control, and supporting daily living activities. This position is at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas

Requirements

  • Completion of a state-approved CNA program.
  • Successfully passed state exam.
  • Registered in the Nursing Assistant Registry whose qualifications have been examined and certified by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) or equivalent.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through American Heart Association or Red Cross.
  • Maintain a current, active, valid and unrestricted/unencumbered certification or authorizing document from any U.S. state, District of Columbia or U.S. territory or jurisdiction to work as a CNA.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in the last two years in the required specialty under supervision of a Physician, LVN and/or RN.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.

  • Experience in inpatient psychiatry.

Responsibilities

  • Perform essentially the same duties as military or government civil service nursing assistants of similar experience and skill set, including inpatient psychiatry.
  • Ensure accurate and timely medical documentation in compliance with BAMC policies, recording all patient care activities and status electronically or manually within 72 hours.
  • Verify patient identifiers for safety and accuracy.
  • Perform, monitor, and record vital signs, height, weight, and intake/output.
  • Observe patients for distress or changes in condition and report abnormalities to the appropriate healthcare provider.
  • Assist patients with basic self-care and therapy information to ensure compliance with physician's orders.
  • Dispense ice water and meal trays.
  • Perform personal care tasks including bathing, feeding, lifting, turning, ambulating, and providing hygiene care.
  • Check IV infusion sites for complications.
  • Apply and monitor hot and cold packs as prescribed.
  • Perform daily quality control checks on glucose test monitors.
  • Collect or assist in the collection of specimens (e.g., fecal occult blood, urine).
  • Assist healthcare providers in examinations and procedures (e.g., physical exams, X-rays, lumbar punctures, biopsies, PAP/Pelvic examinations).
  • Assist in admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.
  • Transport patients within BAMC for tests, procedures, or appointments.
  • Provide general information to patients and visitors regarding hospital policies and directions.
  • Reinforce instructions provided by professional staff.
  • Care for patients in isolation.
  • Assist in orientation/precepting of newly assigned personnel.
  • Assist with administrative tasks, including setting up and stamping patient records, filing documents, and recording observations.
  • Assist in the general maintenance of the unit and patient care equipment, including cleaning, sorting, storing supplies, disposing of waste, and restocking forms.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within skill set.
  • Report potential/actual problems to physician, LVN, or RN.
  • Maintain clear and effective professional communication with the healthcare team, staff, patients, and visitors.
  • Work cooperatively with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Maintain a clean patient environment.
  • Exercise universal precautions for infection control and safety.
  • Recognize and initiate appropriate measures in emergency situations.
  • Abide by BAMC safety and infection control policies and procedures.
  • Provide age-specific care based on SOPs, provider's orders, patient needs, and BAMC policies.
  • Utilize comprehensive knowledge of workload requirements and staff capabilities to manage personnel resources in response to patient care needs.
  • Attend and participate in patient nursing reports, patient care conferences, team/unit/clinic conferences, discharge planning, and staff conferences.
