About The Position

The Certified Medication Aide (CMA) is responsible for the safe and accurate preparation and administration of prescribed medications to residents. This role involves meticulous documentation, adherence to physician's orders, and maintaining a clean and secure medication environment. The CMA also assists with resident care, monitors vital signs, and ensures medical records are kept up-to-date. Compliance with privacy laws and facility policies is essential.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a state approved training program in medication administration.
  • Must complete annual medication evaluation with Registered Pharmacy Consultant.
  • Current CPR Certification
  • Current QMA Certificate for current state

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and administers safely and documents regularly prescribed oral, eye, nasal, and ear medications to residents.
  • Prepares and administers topical medications to intact skin.
  • Administers, as allowed, PRN drugs when authorized by a licensed nurse.
  • Uses the Physician’s Desk Reference or other appropriate drug reference if unsure or unclear as to drug being administered.
  • Checks physician’s orders against medication forms.
  • Maintains cleanliness and proper storage of all drugs and maintains a clean working environment.
  • Keeps medication cart locked while unattended.
  • Cares for and positions all patient tubing and bags as instructed.
  • Counts all drugs on Individual Control Drug Records with on-coming charge person at shift change.
  • Makes rounds and reports needs and conditions to the charge nurse as applicable.
  • Administers vital signs and documents properly.
  • Keeps medical records current by charting pertinent resident conditions timely and routine charting as scheduled, with co-signature by licensed nurse.
  • Answers call lights, bed/chair sensors, pull-pin alarms, and security care bracelet alarms promptly and courteously.
  • Orders medications from pharmacy per physician order.
  • Complies with the facility’s privacy practices and procedures related to resident and employee records and all state/federal privacy laws as outlined by HIPAA.
