About The Position

The Certified Medication Aide (CMA) is responsible for administering oral and topical medications to patients/residents as ordered by a physician. This role operates under the supervision of a licensed nurse and must adhere to state and federal regulations. The CMA also performs daily tasks to maintain the health, comfort, and well-being of patients/residents.

Requirements

  • State certification as a Nursing Assistant mandatory.
  • State approved medication administration certification (where required).
  • Ability to read, write, and speak the English language.
  • Has reviewed Cantex Continuing Care Networks Clinical Policies and Procedures for Abuse Prevention and knows the employee's responsibility to enforce it.

Responsibilities

  • Administers medications as ordered by a physician under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with state and federal regulations and facility policy.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the 'five rights' of medication administration.
  • May take and record vital signs of patients/residents as assigned or as required by certain medications.
  • Records the administration of medications and/or treatments appropriately.
  • Observes for and reports any reactions and/or side effects of medications to a licensed nurse.
  • Administers PRN medications in accordance with regulations and facility policy, documenting reason and response.
  • May dispense narcotics and account for them under the supervision of a licensed nurse per facility policy.
  • Properly secures medication carts/medication rooms per regulations and facility policy.
  • Attends facility education in-services.
  • May make observation rounds under the supervision of the licensed nurse.
  • May supervise nursing assistants/orderlies as assigned by the charge nurse.
  • Ensures that the medication room, med carts, and medication refrigerators are kept clean and well organized.
  • Ensures that expired medications are removed for destruction per facility policy and procedures.
  • Attends Quality Assurance meetings per request.
  • Ability to function as a Team Leader/Role Model.
  • Responsible for assuring patient/resident safety.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
