About The Position

This position provides support to Limited English Proficiency (LEP) patients, families, and medical staff providing care. The interpreter administers care to designated patients and supports the care team under the direction of the clinical nurse. The role serves as a liaison between clinical and medical staff and patients and/or families, ensuring that patient and family care aligns with IU Health's values.

Requirements

• Medical Interpreter Certification (when available)
• Knowledge of diverse medical terminology in English and target language
• Completion of the Bridging the Gap program or national certification
• High level of oral and written fluency in English and target language (i.e. Spanish, American Sign Language, or Burmese languages)
• Knowledge and cultural understanding of target communities (i.e. Hispanic/Latino, deaf, or Burmese communities)
• May require additional training and appropriate certification in language interpretation

Nice To Haves

• Minimum of two (2) years of medical interpretation experience strongly preferred
• Bachelor's degree preferred
• Prior interpreting experience in target language (i.e. Spanish, American Sign Languages, or Burmese languages) in a medical setting preferred

Responsibilities

• Assist with additional assignments, including translation, as needed
