About The Position

Under the supervision of the START Clinic Nurse and/or Nurse Practitioner, performs medical assistant specific tasks. Greets patients, activates files and prepares patients as needed to move patient through their phone and/ or office appointment. Performs other duties as required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant certification program course and certification required within 6 months of hire.
  • Medical Assistant certification is required within 6 months of hire.
  • BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) – American Heart “Healthcare Provider (HCP) – AHA Approved required.
  • New hires must have American Heart Association (AHA) appropriate certification prior to completion of orientation.
  • Must be adaptable to various working conditions and job demands.
  • Must demonstrate patience, understanding and good communication skills.
  • Must have ability to give attention to detail and to be resourceful.
  • Must maintain a professional attitude and be accountable and sensitive to the needs of patients as well as internal and external customers.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Exceptional communication (verbal and written) and customer service skills necessary for interaction with patients, visitors and staff.
  • Multi-tasking skills necessary for performing day to day functions in a stressful, dynamic work environment.
  • Must be able to function independently and as a team member.
  • Must be flexible, dependable and promote a professional image.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Knowledgeable in cognitive, physical, emotional and chronological states of human growth and development.
  • Competent to provide assessment, care and treatment appropriate to the age group of the patients served.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews and updates medical records ensuring all patient information is properly documented in accordance with expectations.
  • Based on previous and current assessments (i.e. vital signs, chart review, patient symptoms), recognizes changes in the patient’s condition and communicates these changes to the provider in a timely manner.
  • Provides competent assessment, care and treatment appropriate to the age of patients.
  • Delivers care in a manner that preserves patient autonomy, dignity and rights.
  • Recognizes and reports to appropriate personnel if signs of child, elder or domestic abuse are noticed.
  • Performance of on-site tests and procedures inherent to practice setting (i.e. phlebotomy, EKG).
  • Completes routine office clinical functions including but not limited to processing patient phone calls and processing faxes in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Accurately and efficiently prepares patient/room/supplies/equipment.
  • Provides education to the patient that includes but is not limited to treatment plan, procedures, medications and general health information.
  • Accurate scheduling of tests, procedures, and consultations with appropriate patient notification.
  • Ensures information is documented in patient’s medical record.
  • Accurate scheduling of office appointments.
  • Utilizes site specific test tracking procedure to ensure all diagnostics are completed and results reported by patient according to policy.
  • Maintains tracking logs pertinent to the medical practice (i.e. medication, Glucometer control, critical lab).
  • Adheres to organizational policies and procedures including those involving HIPPA and safety standards (i.e. biohazard disposal, national patient safety goals, medical record release).
  • Uses a pleasant demeanor when interacting with patients and visitors.
  • Ensures outside records are available when applicable to the patients care plan.
  • Demonstrates appropriate phone etiquette.
  • Utilizes appropriate customer services techniques when interacting with challenging customers.
  • Accurate scheduling of all appointments.
  • Responds to patient and customer complaints in a timely manner.
  • Notifies appropriate staff of resolution.
  • Utilizes resources as necessary to obtain answers to questions encountered while completing job duties.
  • Identifies own educational needs; set goals for self-growth.
  • Meets attendance policy.
  • Completes mandatory in-services.
  • Completes work assignments in an organized, accurate, and timely fashion.
  • Assists in keeping exam rooms/supply storage areas adequately stocked and cleaned while ensuring supplies are not expired.
  • Serves as a resource by assisting in orientation and ongoing education of other staff.
  • Responsible for ensuring continual preparedness by participating in activities, education, and successfully demonstrating knowledge in the performance of daily duties.
  • When requested, actively participates in mock surveys, committees or other activities related to federal/state/Joint Commission regulations.
  • Provides prompt and accurate data collection and reporting.
  • Documents or notifies appropriate personnel of concern/safety issues and makes suggestions for improvement.
