Bon Secours Mercy Health is seeking a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) for their Urgent Care in Harrisonburg. The CMA is a multi-skilled clinical professional responsible for providing patient care within their scope of practice. This includes assisting providers with patient assessments, documenting patient needs, participating in care planning, and administering medications as directed and within state guidelines. The position involves direct patient interaction, clinical support, and administrative tasks to ensure efficient daily operations and high-quality patient care.

Requirements

  • High School/GED (required)
  • Active Medical Assisting certification from one of the following: Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) by American Association of Medical Assisting, Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) by American Medical Technologists, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) by National Healthcareer Association, Nationally Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) by National Center for Competency Testing (not accepted in South Carolina), Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) by National Association for Health Professionals (not accepted in South Carolina).
  • If unable to obtain MA certification, an Assessment-Based Recognition in Order Entry (ABR-OE) is acceptable (not accepted in South Carolina).
  • BLS Basic Life Support, American Heart Association (required at hire for Roper St Francis Healthcare locations; preferred at hire, required prior to independent patient care at BSMH).
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to collaboratively work with patients, families, and teams within a high-volume environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant post-secondary education program (preferred in all states except South Carolina).
  • Completion of externship or clinical lab training (preferred).
  • 1 year of recent Medical Assisting experience (preferred).
  • In South Carolina, completion of one of the following is required: An accredited Medical assistant post-secondary education program, A Career and technical education health sciences program approved by the South Carolina Department of Education, A medical assisting program provided by a branch of the United States military, A Medical assisting United States Department of Labor approved Registered Apprenticeship program, A Training program that is delivered, in whole or in part, by a health care employer that aligns to a nationally accredited certification exam.

Responsibilities

  • Provides indirect and/or direct patient care within the scope of practice and in alignment with the standards of excellence and quality.
  • Contributes to the completion of the patient’s chief complaint by taking vital signs (respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, height, weight, and temperature).
  • Documents patient/family needs.
  • Participates in planning and implementing care for patients.
  • Administers ordered medications (oral, injection, topically, etc.) within the Medical Assisting scope and state guidelines.
  • Understands and adheres to the legal responsibilities and requirements within the Medical Assistant role.
  • Identifies significant changes in patient condition through data collection and reports them to the provider.
  • Troubleshoots issues and escalates problems to the provider, direct supervisor, or appropriate internal resource.
  • Demonstrates standards of excellence in care in all interactions.
  • Maintains clinical and administrative skills per departmental competency guidelines.
  • Escorts patients to examination rooms and prepares them for the physician.
  • May travel to other facilities for BSMH providers or adjust hours to meet patient care needs as directed by the practice manager.
  • Records patients' medical history, vital statistics, or information such as test results in medical records.
  • Interviews patients to obtain medical information and measure their vital signs, weight, and height.
  • Prepares and administers medications as directed by a physician.
  • Collects blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens, logs the specimens, and prepares them for testing.
  • Provides authorized prescription and drug refill information for pharmacies as directed by provider.
  • Explains treatment procedures, medications, diets, or physicians' instructions to patients.
  • Cleans and sterilizes instruments and disposes of contaminated supplies.
  • Performs routine laboratory tests and sample analyses.
  • Performs general office duties, such as answering telephones, taking dictation, or completing insurance forms.
  • Assists physicians in examining and treating patients by handing them instruments, giving injections, removing sutures, and changing dressings on wounds.
  • Successfully completes skills or competency checklists.
