About The Position

Performs assigned patient care duties under the direction of a licensed provider (MD/PA/NP) or RN. Responsible for performing CMA clinical duties to include, but not limited to obtaining vital signs, administering limited profile of medications/injections per approved policy, performing simple diagnostic tests, collecting specimens, drawing blood, cleaning equipment, ordering/stocking supplies, and maintaining exam rooms in an outpatient care setting. Assists in emergencies as directed by licensed provider or RN. Duties are practice site-specific and may fluctuate based on location.

Requirements

  • Other / Certificate Medical Assisting
  • BLS-I - Basic Life Support - Instructor or BLS - Basic Life Support
  • CMA - Cert Medical Assistant
  • Minimum 1 year outpatient setting
  • Phlebotomy/EKG/Manual BP

Responsibilities

  • Completes Ambulatory Intake to include: Interviewing patients for information about the visit and any recent problems.
  • Obtains vital signs, height and weight, medical, family, and social history.
  • Verifies that one current problem exists.
  • Updates allergies and medications and accurately records findings on intake form in EMR.
  • May be required to perform EKGs, ABIs, six-minute walk tests, etc.
  • Assists physicians with exams and procedures.
  • Prepares room with supplies and instruments.
  • Provides education and emotional support to the patient throughout the procedure.
  • Properly disposes of biohazard waste.
  • Documents procedure in AD Hoc note in EMR.
  • Answers triage nurse line or retrieves voicemail messages.
  • Provides information to caller promptly (within 24 hours).
  • Documents disposition/request for information via inbox message in PowerChart to patients physician.
  • Consults with RN/PA in the clinic as necessary in absence of a physician.
  • Maintains contact with supported providers during non-clinic days via phone, PowerChart inbox messages, etc.
  • Obtains labs (to include blood, urine, and nasal swabs) per hospital policy; documents and enters charges accordingly.
  • May administer seasonal flu/pneumonia vaccines and other site-specific premeasured injections.
  • Maintains assigned exam rooms.
  • Wipes down exam table, equipment, BP cuffs, scales, computer keyboard.
  • Restocks linen and medical supplies.
  • Annotates same on room log.
  • Monitors expiration dates on all applicable supplies.
  • Maintains assigned areas of the clinic by completing environmental sweeps monthly or more often.
  • Performs front office duties as assigned (registration, scheduling, payment collection, check-in/out, insurance authorization, etc.)
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
