About The Position

Duke Primary Care Blue Ridge is seeking a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) to join their dedicated healthcare team. This role is integral to providing direct patient care within a comprehensive medical practice that serves patients of all ages. The team includes family care doctors, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants who offer a wide range of services such as annual physical exams, health screenings, preventive care, diagnostics, smoking cessation support, treatment for acute illnesses, immunizations, diabetes education, nutrition counseling, and women's health services. They also provide well-child care, routine check-ups, and school physicals for infants, children, and adolescents, managing conditions like allergies, asthma, and diabetes.

Requirements

  • High school or GED graduation required.
  • Certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA or ARMA required.
  • BLS required.
  • Good customer service skills.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Working knowledge of sterile techniques and special procedures applicable to work performed.
  • Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administering routine and special treatments to patients.
  • Working knowledge of sanitation, personal hygiene, and basic health and safety precautions applicable for work in a clinic setting.
  • Working knowledge of infection control procedures and safety precautions.
  • Age-specific competencies.
  • Daily clinic preparation process; registration, scheduling, charge posting, order entry.
  • Ability to document and communicate pertinent information.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and clinic staff.
  • Typing skills.
  • Medical terminology.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduation from accredited Medical Assistant program strongly preferred (Level I).
  • Graduation from a medical assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) strongly preferred (Levels II & III).
  • At least 1 year of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant in a clinical setting (Level II).
  • At least 3 years of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant in a clinical setting (Level III).
  • 1 year of experience will be provided for an Associate degree in Medical Assisting.
  • Ability to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively (Levels II and III).

Responsibilities

  • Functions as an integral member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team in providing direct patient care.
  • Performs routine administrative and patient care supportive duties in a Health System medical practice.
  • Assists medical and/or nursing staff in the examination and treatment of patients.
  • Ensures the clinic/office runs smoothly.
  • Answers telephones.
  • Greets patients.
  • Updates and files patient medical records.
  • Fills out insurance forms.
  • Handles correspondence.
  • Schedules appointments.
  • Arranges for hospital admissions.
  • Arranges for laboratory services.
  • Handles billing and bookkeeping.
  • Takes medical histories and recording vital signs.
  • Explains treatment procedures to patients.
  • Prepares patients for examinations and procedures.
  • Assists the physician during the examination and procedures.
  • Collects and prepares laboratory specimens.
  • Performs basic laboratory tests on the premises.
  • Disposes of contaminated supplies.
  • Sterilizes medical instruments.
  • Promotes patient/family understanding of the educational content and his/her involvement in the plan of care, and documents in patient record.
  • Prepares and administers medications as directed by a physician.
  • Authorizes drug refills as directed.
  • Telephones prescriptions to a pharmacy.
  • Draws blood.
  • Prepares patients for x-rays, tests and procedures.
  • Takes electrocardiograms.
  • Removes sutures/staples.
  • Changes sterile and non-sterile dressings.
