About The Position

This role is responsible for assisting physicians with patient care, clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks. The position involves appointment scheduling and chart management, providing information to patients to ensure they can fully utilize clinic services, and conveying a positive image of the clinic. The Certified Medical Assistant may be assigned to a specific medical specialty to assist with patient care related to that specialty.

Requirements

  • High school diploma.
  • Completed accredited MOA program, including externship.
  • Minimum of one-year work experience in a public contact job, preferably service-related.
  • Experience in a health care or practice setting.
  • Maintain Certified Medical Assistant status thru American Association of Medical Assistants, certification as Registered Medical Assistant with American Medical Technologists, CCMA through National HealthCareer Association, NCMA through National Center for Competency Testing or CDT through Association of Certified Dermatology Techs.
  • Maintain CPR certification.
  • Knowledge of the health care field and medical specialty.
  • Knowledge of specific assisting tasks related to a particular medical specialty.
  • Knowledge of information that must be conveyed to patients and families.
  • Skill in performing tasks appropriately.
  • Skill in tact and diplomacy in interpersonal interactions.
  • Skill in understanding patient education needs by effectively sharing information with patients and families.
  • Ability to learn and retain information regarding patient care procedures.
  • Ability to project a pleasant and professional image.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and complete delegated tasks.
  • Ability to demonstrate compassion and caring in dealing with others.
  • Ability to be dependable and a team-player.

Responsibilities

  • Checking schedules and organizing patient flow.
  • Accompanying patients to exam/procedure room.
  • Assisting patients with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, and preparing for exams.
  • Collecting patient history.
  • Performing screenings per provider guidelines.
  • Assisting physicians/nurses with various procedures and injections.
  • Charting patient vital signs and weight.
  • Relaying instructions to patients/families and pharmacies.
  • Answering calls and providing pertinent information.
  • Performing phlebotomy as assigned.
  • Sending/receiving patient medical records.
  • Obtaining lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, and referral information.
  • Completing forms and requisitions.
  • Scheduling appointments.
  • Verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics.
  • Managing documents and ensuring information is completed and filed appropriately.
  • Setting up instruments and equipment according to department protocol.
  • Cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control.
  • Cleaning sterilizer according to scheduled maintenance program and keeping appropriate records.
  • Ordering, sorting, and storing supplies.
  • Restocking exam/procedure rooms.
  • Respecting and promoting patient rights.
  • Responding appropriately to emergency codes.
  • Sharing problems relating to patients and/or staff with immediate supervisors quickly.
  • Maintaining OSHA/HIPPA Compliance, including updating manuals.
  • Serving as a first responder for employees with exposures/incidents.
  • Performing other responsibilities or duties as assigned.
