About The Position

Duke University Health System seeks to hire an experienced Certified Medical Assistant who will embrace our mission of Advancing Health Together. The Special Procedures Unit is a procedure-based unit providing care to children undergoing procedures with general anesthesia. Procedures include EGD Colonoscopy, Bronchoscopies, Bone Marrow Aspirate and Biopsy, LPs, Small Surgical cases and Dye Laser. Ideal candidates will have a passion for teamwork, demonstrate accountability and have an appreciation for family-centered care.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED required.
One year of clinical experience as a Certified Medical Assistant in a clinical setting (for Level II).
Two years of clinical experience as a Certified Medical Assistant in a clinical setting (for Level III).
Three years of clinical experience as a Certified Medical Assistant in a clinical setting (for Level IV).
One year of experience may be credited for an Associate degree in Medical Assisting.
Applicants for Levels II, III, and IV must meet all requirements outlined in the Medical Assistant, Certified (CMA/RMA) Ladder Program.
Certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA, or ARMA required.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
Demonstrated customer service skills and the ability to maintain effective working relationships with patients and staff.
Knowledge of sterile technique, special procedures, routine and specialty treatments, infection prevention practices, sanitation standards, and clinic safety precautions.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and communicate pertinent patient and operational information effectively.
Ability to independently seek resources and work collaboratively in Levels II and III roles.
Ability to perform daily clinic preparation activities including registration, scheduling, charge posting, and order entry.
Proficiency in typing and medical terminology.
Demonstrated age-specific competencies.
Ability to perform heavy lifting and transport stretcher and wheelchair patients as needed.

Nice To Haves

Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program strongly preferred (Level I).
Graduation from a Medical Assistant program accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES strongly preferred (Levels II-IV).

Responsibilities

Function as an integral member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team in providing direct patient care.
Perform routine administrative and patient care supportive duties that assist medical and nursing staff in the examination and treatment of patients and ensure the clinic operates efficiently.
Take medical histories, record vital signs, explain treatment procedures to patients, and prepare patients for examinations and procedures.
Assist with examinations and procedures, collect and prepare laboratory specimens, perform basic laboratory testing, obtain electrocardiograms, remove sutures and staples, change dressings, provide patient and family education, and document care in the medical record.
Process instruments, perform high-level disinfection and sterilization activities, dispose of contaminated supplies, administer medications as directed, and support prescription and refill workflows.
Schedule appointments, arrive and check out patients in MaestroCare, coordinate referrals, admissions, and laboratory services, and maintain patient records.
Support billing, copay collection, insurance documentation, correspondence, and supply management activities.
Serve as a liaison for clinic quality and regulatory initiatives and participate in clinic committees as requested.
