About The Position

The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations, and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between the people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation. The Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) supports the Department by acquiring, distributing, installing and maintaining Local Area Networks, personal computers, mainframe computers, software, and data communications networks. ITSD also plans and coordinates the implementation of advanced technology. The selected candidate will perform SQL Server database administration functions, including maintenance of multiple environments (development, testing and production), patching, troubleshooting, SSIS and SSRS deployments and security management. They will monitor and analyze data platforms to ensure databases are available, secure, healthy, efficient, and recoverable as per expectations. The role involves building and managing HA and DR architectures like Clustering, Replication, and Always On. Implementing and managing physical databases for mission-critical systems, including capacity planning to determine future storage needs, is also a key responsibility. The candidate will collaborate with application owners to develop a seamless process for migrating schemas and data to the data platform, and partner with development and quality assurance teams to deliver robust, quality, on-time solutions. Additionally, the role includes supervising subordinates, leading projects, and coordinating multi-team operations. Monitoring the installation of SQL Server, configuration, patching, database backup and recovery, and database performance tuning and maintenance are also part of the duties.

Requirements

• Professional/Vendor Certification(s) in database administration that is required for the position to be filled.
• A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, and two years of satisfactory full-time (not classroom based) experience in database administration. Experience must include database design, configuration, installation, troubleshooting, integration, performance monitoring, maintenance, enhancement, and security management.
• A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and six years of satisfactory full-time (not classroom based) information technology experience (IT) of which at least two years must have been database administration experience as described in '1' above.
• A satisfactory equivalent of education and/or experience equivalent to '1' or '2' above.
• Undergraduate education may be substituted for experience on the basis that 30 undergraduate semester credits from an accredited college or university is equivalent to 6 months of information technology experience, but may not be substituted for the required database administration experience.
• A masters degree in computer science or a related field from an accredited college or university may substitute for one year of database administration experience.
• All candidates must have at least one year of satisfactory full-time (not classroom based) database administration experience as described in '1' above.
