About The Position

The Certified Lumber Grader holds grading certification(s) and applies the requisite grading rules of the Western Wood Products Association (WWPA) to identify grades of lumber. Collins is a family-owned company founded in 1855, committed to building a better world through land and resource stewardship on its 370 thousand acres of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified forest lands. With operations in California, Oregon, and Pennsylvania, Collins manufactures softwood and hardwood lumber, particleboard, and hardboard siding.

Requirements

  • Must meet position requirements to be considered a candidate for this position.
  • Possess and maintain at least one grading certification.
  • Ability to follow all company, state and federal safety rules when performing required job duties.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment criminal history check and a pre-employment drug screening.

Nice To Haves

  • The National Grading Rules (NGR) Certificate F, “All NGR Grades;” Certificate C, “Commons;” and Certificate A, “Shop” are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Comply with safety standards at all times and correct/report any observed safety hazards.
  • Assign grades in a manner that is consistent with the guidelines established by the company and the WWPA.
  • Maintain a grading accuracy of 95 percent in all products.
  • Communicate with and learn from other certified lumber graders and the Dry End Supervisor, Quality Control Coordinator, and WWPA inspectors for continued education.
  • Remain up to date on current lumber markets and product values.
  • Mark lumber for trimming to obtain the highest marketable value from the material and verify stamp legibility.
  • Report any planer manufacturing defects immediately to department supervisor.
  • Cooperate with the inspection of completed units to ensure accuracy and profitability.
  • Assist in the successful development of uncertified graders.
  • Perform additional duties as required by supervisor.
  • On-site attendance is essential to effectively perform the listed duties and responsibilities.
  • Periodic travel may be required for training or product inspections.
