About The Position

The Doula is an experienced and compassionate member of the Women’s Health team with the ability to provide emotional and physical support to expectant mothers and their families. The Doula assists mothers through labor, delivery, and postpartum periods. This role also provides educational support to expecting parents, as well as assistance with breastfeeding and caring for a newborn.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification from an approved organization, i.e., DONA International required
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification required.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience as a Certified Doula
  • A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Knowledge of child birthing and nursing techniques, non-medicinal pain management strategies, and childcare best practices
  • Interpersonal skills to inspire trust and build strong relationships with clients.
  • Active listening skills to fully understand clients’ preferences and needs.
  • Verbal communication skills to facilitate conversations with clients, their families, and medical providers.
  • Problem-solving skills to manage issues that arise during and after delivery.
  • Organizational and time management skills to deliver care for multiple clients at one time.
  • Computer skills for emailing, client relationship management, billing and using word processing software.
  • A calming and nurturing presence.
  • The ability to answer questions and provide guidance in a nonjudgemental way.
  • The ability to remain calm, multitask and provide emotional support.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Providing the mother with emotional, physical, moral, and educational support, especially during times when the father and other close relatives are unavailable.
  • Listening to the concerns and questions of the mother in a kind, nonjudgemental way and offering the best possible advice.
  • Attending prenatal meetings to get to know the mother and establish her birth preferences and other requirements.
  • Remaining with the mother throughout labor and providing physical and emotional support during and after childbirth.
  • Visiting the home of the mother once she has been discharged and assisting with the care of the baby while the mother heals.
  • Providing practical support and advice to the mother after childbirth, like organizing the nursery, running errands, and assisting with breastfeeding and meal preparation.
  • Keeping up to date on childbirth support, birthing techniques, and pre- and post-natal care by conducting research, networking with other Doulas and mothers, and attending workshops and lectures.
  • Assisting in whatever way possible to make the transition to motherhood easier.
  • Adheres to the organization’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Adheres to the organization’s policies regarding time and attendance.
  • Comply with accepted dress code and maintain a professional image.
  • Demonstrates reliability and trustworthiness.
  • Manages time and other resources to meet established goals within the agreed time frames.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in the acceptance and completion of work assignments.
  • Participate in the department’s performance improvement activities.
  • Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information.
  • Observes the Health Care System’s compliance policies.
