About The Position

Custer County Sheriff’s Office is hiring full-time Certified Deputy Sheriffs in Custer, South Dakota. Relocation or commuting is required. Deputies serve a community spanning more than 1,500 square miles, including areas around Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer State Park, Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Black Hills National Forest, and Buffalo Gap National Grassland. The Sheriff’s Office also provides contract patrol services for the United States Forest Service and the City of Custer. The starting wage is $27.59 per hour for current South Dakota certified officers, with a $1.00 per hour shift differential for hours worked between 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM. Deputies receive individual patrol vehicles, duty gear, and uniforms. The benefits package includes paid holidays, vacation and sick leave accrual, employee health insurance with a Health Savings Account option, SDRS retirement, dental and vision coverage, and additional life insurance options.

Requirements

Current South Dakota Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Training Commission certification.
At least 21 years of age.
High school diploma or GED.
Valid driver’s license with an insurable driving history.
Successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation.
No prior felony or simple assault, domestic violence convictions.
Availability to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays.

Enforce local and state laws.
Prevent and suppress crime and accidents.
Serve legal processes.
Promote public safety through community policing.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Provide contract patrol services for the United States Forest Service and the City of Custer.
