About The Position
The Dental Assistant must perform all duties in accordance with standards and methods generally accepted within the field of dental assistant services, and in compliance with all Federal and State policy and regulations. The Dental Assistant will assist the dentist during dental procedures, assist in maintaining accountability and sterilization of instruments, become proficient in Bureau Electronic Medical Records System [BEMR] (the inmate electronic medical record), conduct him/herself in a professional manner around inmates, and perform any other tasks deemed necessary by the dentist while adhering to the general practice of a dental assistant.
Requirements
- Must process a High School Certificate of Graduation or GED.
- Must have specialty training from a licensed dentist and/or certification from an accredited Dental Assistant school.
- Training must include dental radiology and radiology safety.
- Must hold current CPR certification from the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.
- Must have a minimum of two (2) years of experience providing Dental Assistant services.
Nice To Haves
- Bilingual oral communication skills and experience in a clinical correctional setting are desirable.
Responsibilities
- Assists the Dental Officer in restorative, oral surgery, periodontics, prosthetics, examinations, and emergency cases.
- Retrieves patient records, escorts patients to the appropriate dental area, seats and prepares them for treatment, and provides dismissal and follow-up instructions.
- Prepares dental instruments, materials, medications, treatment rooms, and equipment for procedures; passes instruments, retracts tissues, irrigates, and operates the aspirator.
- Assists the Dental Officer by preparing dental instruments, essential materials, drugs, and medications.
- Passes instruments, retracts tissues, irrigates oral cavities, and operates an aspirator.
- Observes patient's responses and assists patient for dismissal from the Dental Clinic.
- Give instructions for subsequent dental appointments.
- Makes necessary entries on dental treatment records (both electronic and paper records).
- Prepares the dental treatment room for the next patient.
- Assists in the treatment of emergency cases.
- Provides dental health education.
- Preparation of patients for periodontal surgery.
- Dental and periodontal charting.
- Prepares places and removes packs.
- Places and removal of rubber dams.
- Maintains dental equipment.
- Cleans, sharpens, and sterilizes instruments.
- Performs daily inspection of equipment and makes minor repairs.
- Reports defective equipment or utilizes corrective action.
- Performs routine polishing of the clinical crowns of teeth.
- Uses basic dental hand instruments and oral hygiene aides.
- Performs procedures pursuant to the fabrication and repair of complete denture prosthesis and removable partial prosthesis.
- Uses acrylic resins as basic materials.
- Takes radiographs of patients using digital dental radiography.
- Obtains diagnostic quality periapical, occlusal, lateral, jaw, TMJ, and panographic radiographs.
- Correctly positions the patient and film.
- Determines the level of radiation intensity to minimize radiation exposure of patients.
- Processes and saves digital radiographs to patient medical records.
- Performs quality assurances on radiographic and developing equipment.
- Maintains proper infection control procedures in radiographic techniques.
- Sterilizes contaminated biological waste of the dental clinic.
- Make primary impressions and pour casts
- Selects tooth shade for composite restorations and dentures
