Certified ASL Interpreter, Maryland Government Agencies - Annapolis, MD
About The Position
CLFC Healthcare and Communications is seeking certified American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters to join its roster for assignments with Maryland government agencies. These assignments will be delivered in person across the state and via video remotely. The work involves community and government interpreting, including public meetings, agency appointments, employee trainings, and formal proceedings like administrative hearings and investigatory interviews. Many assignments are conducted via video, while others require on-site presence. For longer, technical, or high-stakes assignments, interpreters will work in teams of two. This role is ideal for established interpreters in Maryland or the Washington D.C. area seeking well-compensated government work with the flexibility to choose assignments. Interpreters can opt for on-site assignments, video assignments, or both. This is contract work on a per-assignment basis, not a salaried position.
Requirements
- Current national certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (NIC, NIC Advanced, NIC Master, CI and CT, or CSC).
- Compliance with Maryland's sign language interpreter licensing requirement when it takes effect on January 1, 2028.
- Professional interpreting experience in community or government settings, working in both directions and holding register in formal settings.
- For video assignments: reliable high-speed internet, a camera and lighting that show signing clearly, and a private workspace.
- If taking on-site assignments: reliable transportation to assignment locations in your part of Maryland.
- Adherence to the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct.
Nice To Haves
- Legal interpreting qualification or documented experience in formal proceedings.
- Holders of the RID Specialist Certificate: Legal are especially welcome.
- Experience interpreting for government agencies, public meetings, or public testimony.
- Experience with DeafBlind consumers, oral transliteration, or teaming with a Certified Deaf Interpreter.
- Availability for same-day, evening, or short-notice requests.
Responsibilities
- Interpret between spoken English and American Sign Language in public meetings, agency appointments, employee meetings, trainings, and formal proceedings.
- Match the consumer's preferred mode of communication, including signed English and transliteration, and accurately voice signed communication into spoken English while maintaining appropriate register.
- Deliver video remote and virtual meeting assignments with stable video and audio, and reconnect quickly if a session drops.
- Work in a team of two on long, technical, or high-stakes assignments.
- Maintain neutrality and accuracy in all settings.
- Keep all information learned during an assignment confidential and handle preparation materials securely.
- Confirm acceptance of assignments promptly.
- Notify CLFC as early as possible if unable to cover a confirmed assignment.
- Submit assignment records and invoices promptly.
Benefits
- Compensation: $80.00 to $85.00 per hour as an independent contractor (1099).
