About The Position

Analytical Mechanics Associates (AMA) has an immediate opening for a Materials Engineering Subject Matter Expert. The Manufacturing Applications Branch (MAB) is seeking a SME in ceramics to support the Engineering Directorate (ED) and Research Directorate (RD) at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC). The work location is a materials casting laboratory environment that produces one-of-a-kind wind tunnel models and test articles.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience is required.
  • The ideal candidate must be able to perform all work independently or with a small group.
  • The ability to use a computer to receive work packages, review drawing files, provide email correspondence, compose technical documents, and maintain a work calendar is necessary for the position.
  • This individual must also be willing to embrace and implement Agency and Center safety/environmental training and requirements including the use of personal protective equipment as well as the proper disposal of hazardous waste materials.
  • The candidate must be able to pass a physical with medical protocols for forklift usage, wearing a respirator, and any requirements for working with chemicals.
  • This position requires U.S. citizenship or permanent residence.

Nice To Haves

  • Possess the skills required to create ceramic aeroheating models for testing in wind tunnels.
  • Possess the skills required for Phosphor coating aeroheating models for wind tunnel testing.
  • Able to apply for or maintain secret security clearance for classified projects.
  • Possess the knowledge required to review layouts, engineering/production drawings, specifications, and test reports.

Responsibilities

  • The subject matter expert will work closely with researchers to develop unique ceramic hardware.
  • A variety of materials (adhesives, resins, silica, silicone rubber, solvents, wax, etc.) will be used during the model development process.
  • Molds will need to be created for casting models.
  • Equipment such as band saws, drill presses, sanders, furnaces, kilns, and barrel rollers will be used frequently.
  • Participate in basic concept and feasibility studies and design exercises that will be used to develop/test new or modified equipment.
  • Lead or actively participate in meetings with contractors, suppliers, end users, and/or repair personnel to develop overall equipment support plans.
  • Provide the technical data necessary to develop procurement descriptions.
  • Advise in developing production procedures and techniques where intensive knowledge of the equipment is required.
  • Request and evaluate laboratory tests and trial installation of modified equipment.
  • Compare equipment offered by contractors to specifications in bid invitations, contracts, etc.
  • Investigate major equipment deficiencies and make recommendations regarding how to resolve any identified issues.
