About The Position

Building and maintaining provincial infrastructure is a significant undertaking. Provincial Outfits, located in Miller Lake, serves as the central hub for the Department of Public Works. This role offers a dynamic and varied work environment, unlike repetitive tasks, as the nature of construction ensures that no two days are alike and every job is different. The department is responsible for supporting Nova Scotia’s extensive road network of 23,000 kilometers and 4,100 bridges. Requirements

  • Grade 12 completion and one (1) year of construction experience and training, or an acceptable equivalence.
  • Prior highway work experience and training in the use and maintenance of equipment.
  • Traffic Control experience is required.
  • Strong customer service focus.
  • Keen eye for detail.
  • Ability to work well and perform within a team that is required to travel and work away from home through the work week.
  • Well-versed in Department and Industry Occupational Health & Safety rules and regulations.
  • Ability to work on a busy highway with the travelling public nearby.
  • A valid Class 3 driver’s license with Air Brake Endorsement is required.
  • Good physical dexterity due to lifting, carrying, and continuous movement required.
  • Ability to work within a confined space on the highway.
  • Ability to multitask and maintain concentration while operating specialized line painting equipment to ensure safe work practices are followed.

Nice To Haves

  • Training in Transportation of Dangerous Goods and Working in Confined Spaces.
  • WHMIS, First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Previous experience as an Operator/Painter.

Responsibilities

  • Setting up, maintaining, and cleaning equipment.
  • Operating paint pump/compressor for loading material.
  • Operating painting equipment, including paint trucks, for painting highway road surfaces.
  • Inspecting completed work for quality and conformance to standards.
  • Assisting with the maintenance and repairs of trucks.
