About The Position

At UPMC Somerset, you’ll play a critical role in patient safety and surgical success. This position offers flexible scheduling to work around your school commitments and includes a rotating 24-hour weekend call requirement for added experience.

Requirements

  • High school Graduate/GED OR 1 year of experience with UPMC
  • Six months of healthcare experience required
  • Must be able to stand for all shift hours and be able to pick up, push, pull etc. 35 pounds.
  • Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution or Certified Registered Central Service Technician with Healthcare Sterile Processing Association.
  • Certification required in our PA and NY facilities (MD is excluded).
  • New employees in our PA and NY facilities (MD is excluded) will have 18 months from date of hire to obtain required certification.
  • Act 34 with renewal

Nice To Haves

  • Currently enrolled in an Accredited Surgical Technician/Sterile Processing Program Preferred.
  • If grandfathered as a technician who does not hold certification, must complete 10 hours of continuing education to remain qualified as a Central Sterile Technician on an annual basis.
  • Certified staff are required to complete 10-12 hours of continuing education as a condition of maintaining certification, as determined by the certifying body.
  • Staff pending certification within 18 months of hire are not required to complete continuing education until certified.

Responsibilities

  • Clean, decontaminate, inspect, assemble, package, sterilize, and distribute surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Prepare and assemble surgical trays following established listings for issue, storage, or further processing.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of all decontamination and sterilization equipment and troubleshoot as needed.
  • Monitor, read, and document sterilizer parameters to ensure proper function.
  • Assess supplies for surgical procedures and set up case carts.
  • Maintain inventory and ensure instruments and patient care equipment are properly cleaned and reassembled.
  • Follow infection control and safety protocols at all times.
  • Participate in performance improvement activities and demonstrate strong communication skills.
  • Display awareness of cost containment and efficient work practices.
