About The Position

The Central Sterile Processing Technician 2 (U) is responsible for preparing supplies and equipment for use during patient procedures, achieving competency in two areas of sterile processing. This role involves receiving, processing, stocking, and distributing supplies. The technician cleans and disinfects equipment requiring decontamination or sterilization, performs assembly, packing, sterilization, documentation, and handles implantable devices, case carts, emergency carts, and supplies for surgical nursing units and ancillary departments, assisting with daily operational flow. They ensure adequate equipment and supplies are available to complete order requests and transport instruments and supplies efficiently, prioritizing patient safety. The technician must achieve and maintain productivity demands by fulfilling order requests in a timely manner for various hospital departments. They are responsible for setting up decontamination and assembly workstations daily, following standard work processes (SOW), and preparing/assembling items. Transporting case carts, following safety protocols, and utilizing department tools to prevent errors are key duties. Assembling minor procedure instrumentation for nursing units and ancillary departments, receiving and sorting returned medical equipment and instruments, and operating cart washers and sterilizers are also part of the role. Adherence to infection control and universal precautions, participation in continuous process improvement, and staying updated on departmental guidelines and standards from organizations like the Joint Commission, AAMI, and AORN are crucial. The technician must check equipment for functionality, report malfunctions immediately, and provide high-quality customer service. Maintaining distribution records, logbooks, and operating/documenting sterilizers are essential. Storage of sterile supplies and instrumentation must follow facility policies. Providing shift reports and ensuring patient charges and issued supplies are submitted daily are also required. Adherence to University and unit-level policies and procedures, and safeguarding University assets are expected. This list of duties is not exhaustive and may be expanded as needed.

Requirements

  • High School or Equivalent
  • Graduate of a Vocational Training Program in Central Sterile Processing or a Surgical Tech program required
  • Hold one of the following certifications: CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician), IAHCSMM CSPDT (Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician), CBSPD CST (Certified Surgical Technician), NBSTSA
  • BLS certification is required from the American Heart Association
  • Any combination of relevant education, work experience, and/or certifications will be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Transports instruments and supplies to their destination within an efficient time frame, prioritizing patient safety.
  • Achieves and maintains productivity demand level for the area by fulfilling order requests in a timely manner.
  • Sets up decontamination and assembly workstations daily following established standard of work processes (SOW).
  • Transports case carts as requested, following established safety protocols and utilizing department tool aides to prevent errors.
  • Assembles minor procedure instrumentation for nursing units and all other ancillary departments.
  • Receives and sorts medical equipment and instruments returned to decontamination.
  • Loads/unloads cart washer, emergency carts, and sterile supplies.
  • Adheres to infection control and utilizes universal precautions PPE protocols.
  • Participates in continuous process improvement and quality systems.
  • Stays abreast of related departmental practice guidelines and standards from the Joint Commission, AAMI, and AORN.
  • Checks equipment for functionality and reports malfunctioning equipment immediately to leadership.
  • Provides reliable, high quality customer service to all department’s requests.
  • Prepares and distributes request orders, including fulfilling phone order requests for supplies and equipment.
  • Maintains distribution of equipment, supply records, and logbooks.
  • Operates and maintains documentation of various sterilizers and processing equipment.
  • Maintains storage of sterile supplies/surgical instrumentation according to facility policies and procedures.
  • Provides shift report to lead technician or leader of pending and completed requests.
  • Ensures patient charges and issued supplies are given daily to lead technician or leader by end of shift.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
