About The Position

The Central Services Specialist is preferably a certified technician upon hire. In the event that they are not certified, it is required to obtain certification within 12 months from hire date. The Specialist is responsible for processing complex instrumentation including flexible and rigid endoscopes, power instrumentation, laparoscopic/robotic instrumentation, ophthalmology instrumentation and other specialized instrument sets. The specialist also assists in providing in-service education to staff on new instruments, processing scopes and high- risk/low frequency skills. The Specialist is responsible for ordering specialty instrumentation, assisting with preventative maintenance on power equipment, assisting in decontamination at the handwash station during peak volumes, ad hoc projects, orienting new hires to the specialist role, sending instrumentation out for repairs and maintaining par levels of backup instrumentation. . The Central Service specialist coordinates and collaborates with the Supervisor, Lead Technician and Clinical Coordinators of specialty areas to ensure safe efficient care.

Requirements

High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
Experience in the care of a variety of endoscopes and medical instrumentation.
2-4 years of experience in a Central Services/Sterile Processing unit is required.
Must obtain certification within 12 months of hire (The Central Services Technician exam can be taken through HSPA or CBSPD).
Knowledge and experience in the care of endoscopic, power, and robotic instruments and equipment.
Experience with the processing of flexible endoscopes.
Ability to work independently and effectively alone, as well as a member of a collaborative team.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

Processing complex instrumentation including flexible and rigid endoscopes, power instrumentation, laparoscopic/robotic instrumentation, ophthalmology instrumentation and other specialized instrument sets.

Cleaning, decontaminating, inspecting, storing, and preparing flexible gastrointestinal (GI) and pulmonary endoscopes.
Troubleshooting, testing, and maintaining (basic maintenance) of equipment used for high-level disinfection (HLD) and sterilization.
Reviewing the surgical schedule, identifying items needed for surgical procedures, and setting priorities to ensure items are ready prior to case start time.
Providing in-service education to co-workers and others on the care and use of instrumentation, power equipment, and endoscopes.
Developing standard work processes for the performance of work tasks.
Monitoring instruments and equipment that is down for repair to ensure timely return to service.
Serving as a clinical specialty resource for various surgical specialties.
Troubleshooting issues that arise with surgical instrumentation and supplies.
Being proactive and speaking up to prevent the costs associated with large repair bills of complex or delicate equipment.
Setting priorities, being detail-oriented, functioning independently, demonstrating initiative, effective stress, organization, and time management skills, and working efficiently to complete work responsibilities.
Cleaning/Maintenance of all scopes (50%)
Checking insulation of Laparoscopic Instruments (10%)
Monitoring schedule to assure equipment ready on time (10%)
Inservice staff on care of equipment (5%)
Monitoring repairs on scopes and laparoscopic equipment (5%)
Communication with clinical for each service (5%)
Orienting new staff members (15%)
