About The Position

The Sterile Processing Technician performs and participates in decontamination, cleaning, assembling, packaging, scanning, sterilization, storage and distribution of reusable procedural/surgical instrumentation and equipment. Ensures equipment, instruments, and supplies can be reused safely to prevent infections for safe patient care.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Must become central sterile processing certified within 18 months of hire to maintain employment.
  • Has successfully passed a nationally accredited central service exam for central service technicians; holds and maintains CRCST or CSPDT.
  • Provides evidence of employment as a Central Processing Technician in a healthcare facility for a cumulative period of one year, occurring within January 2011 to January 2015.
  • A Central Processing Technician who does not meet these requirements has 18 months from the date of hire to obtain CRCST or CSPDT.
  • If grandfathered in, must have 10 hours of continuing education annually.
  • To be grandfathered in, must have worked as a Central Processing Technician in a healthcare facility for a cumulative period of one year, occurring within January 1, 2011 to January 1, 2015.

Responsibilities

  • Decontaminates and sterilizes instruments, medical supplies and equipment, and assembles, wraps and sterilizes trays of instruments. Follows proper Standard Precautions while in decontamination and sterilization areas.
  • Monitors biological and chemical wash solution to ensure quality and consistency for decontamination of instruments and medical equipment.
  • Utilizes instrument/equipment manufacturer’s instructions for use when necessary.
  • Demonstrates effective time management, flexibility, prioritization, and critical thinking skills in performance of duties.
  • Decontaminates, reprocesses, and maintains flexible endoscopes.
  • Applies principles of microbiology, disinfection, sterilization, and modes of disease transmission to promote an infection-free environment.
  • Communicates and works collaboratively with other staff in the department.
  • Documents and maintains accurate records to remain compliant with regulatory requirements.
  • Protects patient privacy and follows departmental policies/procedures.
  • Works in conjunction with OR staff to provide timely sterile products.
  • Demonstrates willingness to accept non-routine work assignments as appropriate.
