The Center Mental Health Counselor (CMHC) is a key member of the Job Corps Mental Health and Wellness Program (MHWP) and provides mental health assessments for applicants and students to examine mood, behavior, thinking, reasoning and other areas related to emotional wellness. The general emphasis of the MHWP is on the early identification and diagnosis of mental health problems; basic mental health care; and mental health promotion, prevention, and education designed to help students overcome barriers to employability. The program utilizes an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) approach that includes short-term therapy with an employability focus, referral to center support groups, and crisis intervention (such as suicidal behavior, death, serious loss, sexual assault, an emotional reaction to an HIV positive test, or other crisis).
