About The Position

As part of a modem team, the Cellular 5G/4G Physical Layer Firmware Engineer develops embedded firmware for cellular wireless systems, translating hardware capabilities into integrated designs. The role works with product development groups to advance wireless systems and improve customer experiences. The engineer implements 3GPP protocols and control- and data-path processing algorithms under tight timing, latency, and energy constraints, interfacing with specialized cellular ASIC hardware. The work includes firmware architecture for mobile wireless communications systems, collaboration with systems engineers and silicon designers, and support for pre-silicon development and hardware verification. The position also evaluates tools and defines methodologies and best practices for firmware development.

Requirements

  • Experience with hardware control for physical-layer 4G/5G data-path processing.
  • Understanding of 5G and 4G 3GPP protocols.
  • Experience implementing digital signal-processing algorithms using specialized DSP hardware.
  • Strong understanding of linear algebra and digital signal-processing principles.
  • Deep understanding of software-engineering principles and core computer-science fundamentals.
  • Fundamental proficiency with C and C++, compilers, build tools, and source-code control tools.
  • Significant experience with memory-constrained real-time operating systems (RTOS) and concurrent programming.
  • Solid understanding of computer architecture, particularly hardware/software interfaces of high-speed communication subsystems.
  • Experience with silicon prototyping, emulation systems, and virtual platforms.
  • Proficiency debugging embedded software systems.
  • Familiarity with UARTs, JTAG, and oscilloscopes.
  • Some mainstream operating-system application-level development experience and Python or Perl scripting experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, electronics and telecommunications, computer engineering, or computer science.

Responsibilities

  • Implement 3GPP protocols and control- and data-path processing algorithms for specialized cellular ASIC hardware under tight time, latency, and energy budgets.
  • Implement processing for 3GPP channels and procedures, including PDCCH, PDSCH, PBCH, PUCCH, PUSCH, PRACH, UL/DL HARQ, and tracking loops.
  • Implement algorithms in areas such as channel estimation, channel state feedback, interference cancellation, cell search and measurement, and beam measurement.
  • Work with systems engineers to refine signal-processing algorithms for efficient firmware and hardware execution.
  • Work with silicon designers to define hardware interfaces, processors, buses, DMA, accelerators, and memory subsystems.
  • Specify, design, and implement firmware architecture for a mobile wireless communications system.
  • Assist in developing pre-silicon emulation systems and virtual platforms, and use them for pre-silicon firmware design and hardware verification.
  • Evaluate and implement tools for build, formal verification, and testing.
  • Define methodologies and best practices.
