About The Position

The Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) has developed the Laundry Supervisor Trainee Program to train interested and qualified individuals in correctional facility laundry operations. This position is classified as a Correctional Officer I. The trainee will receive on-the-job training in correctional facility laundry operations while maintaining the safety and security of the assigned correctional facility. This program provides the opportunity to gain relevant work experience toward promotion to a Correctional Support Trades Supervisor (CSTS I) in Facilities Laundry Operations. Upon successful completion, the candidate may advance to a CSTS I position, which requires 4 years of laundry employment experience operating commercial grade washers and dryers or a combination of 2 years of laundry experience and 2 years of correctional experience. Under supervision, this position performs hands-on work alongside inmates and is trained in ensuring safety and security, training and overseeing inmate work crews in laundry operations, and ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant completion of assigned tasks. The position promotes the CDOC Mission and Vision with integrity and commitment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or a GED certificate.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Have no felony convictions or domestic violence history.
  • Possess a valid, unrestricted driver's license.

  • Proficiency in the operations of commercial/industrial washer and dryers.
  • Ability to effectively maintain established inventory, monitor and track supplies and clothing and control chemicals.
  • Ability to monitor equipment use and ensure manufacturer recommended maintenance and prompt repairs.
  • Clear understanding of the safe use of cleaning supplies, chemicals and sanitation processes.
  • Willingness and ability to effectively communicate while working with inmates individually and in groups, providing verbal and/or written instructions, monitoring work progress, quality and compliance, in a highly regulated environment with firm deadlines and mandatory reporting and record-keeping regulations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively cooperate with other staff and inmates and inspire teamwork.
  • Willingness and ability to train, coach and mentor inmate workers in order to prepare them for community reentry.

  • Drivers must maintain a valid, non-restricted Colorado driver license, obey traffic laws, and be able to safely operate a motor vehicle.
  • Eligibility to drive a State-owned vehicle, includes holding a valid Colorado driver’s license within 30 days of employment or residency change and meeting specific driving record criteria.
  • Have NO felony convictions, to include any actions defined in 5 U.S.C. 301; U.S.C. 509, 510; 42 U.S.C. 15601-15609.
  • The CDOC shall not hire nor promote anyone who may have contact with an offender who has engaged in sexual abuse which includes acts, activity, and sexual behavior, in a prison or other institution as defined in 42 U.S.C. 1997; or has been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse, or has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in the above paragraph.
  • The agency shall consider any incidents of sexual harassment in determining whether to hire anyone who may have contact with offenders or residents.
  • Applicants must have valid U.S. work authorization at the time of application; DOC cannot provide H-1B sponsorship at this time.
  • Successfully pass all modules of the six-week Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, to include English reading comprehension, relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics.
  • Possess the physical ability to successfully complete Defensive Tactics.
  • Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist.
  • Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down.
  • Use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows.
  • Withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows.
  • Swing a baton in a striking technique.
  • Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic.
  • Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions.
  • Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and will be exposed while on assignment.
  • Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security.
  • Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury.
  • Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently.
  • Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations.
  • Deal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors, utilizing tactfulness and a congenial, personable manner.
  • Work with people of the opposite sex, diverse racial ethnic groups, mentally ill and emotionally disturbed offenders.
  • Communicate by talking, listening and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information, assignments.
  • Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings.
  • Willing and able to travel.
  • Willing and able to work various shifts, days, afternoons, graveyards (nights) which includes a rotating shift schedule.
  • TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire.
  • Successful completion of a background investigation is required.
  • Employees (see exception below) may use marijuana in their personal time but are prohibited from working while under the influence of any substance, including marijuana.
  • A drug test will be administered to all new employees; employees must successfully pass.
  • Random drug screening will occur throughout employment.
  • Exception: Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified employees are prohibited from the use of marijuana.
  • Health care professionals must check their licensing requirements regarding marijuana use.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Maintain safety and security of facility and work sites through clear and accurate communication.
  • Train and guide inmates in the proper use of controlled items, tools, equipment, and chemicals.
  • Enforce security procedures by conducting work site searches and monitoring workplace environment and inmate behavior.
  • Initiate verbal reprimands and, if necessary, physically control inmates using proper application of restraints or "use of force" techniques.
  • Monitor, supervise, and escort inmates according to policy and limit inmate access to restricted areas.
  • Perform inmate counts and transportation.
  • Respond to emergency situations such as fights, fires, and escapes according to policy.
  • Write and submit required reporting.
  • Maintain safe, secure, and compliant laundry operations and equipment maintenance.
  • Prepare daily weight records, calculate daily consumption of supplies, and maintain all laundry product inventory.
  • Maintain clothing movement records and document all issues, losses, and exchanges to provide accountability for all clothing & linen.
  • Oversee and schedule regular housekeeping assignments for the work unit.
  • Monitor the safe use and storage of cleaning supplies, chemicals, and tools.
  • Provide supervisory duties for assigned inmate crew.
  • Promote a high level of performance and security by setting the work standard according to agency mission, vision, and values.
  • Train and instruct inmates in laundry operations, including the proper use of laundry equipment, sanitation standards, and cleaning supplies.
  • Ensure adherence to established housekeeping and sanitation procedures to prevent injury and infection.
  • Stress proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Track and calculate inmate hours and pay, create schedules, assign tasks, and inspect work.
  • Perform inmate evaluations and reduce inmate idleness, creating real-life work opportunities to prepare inmates for community reentry.
