About The Position

Become a PennDOT CDL Operator with the Department of Transportation and play an important role in keeping Pennsylvania moving! In this position, you will operate equipment, assist maintenance crews, and help ensure safe travel conditions. Your work supports the agency’s mission to serve communities and protect public safety. Take on a hands-on job where your effort has a direct impact on the state’s transportation system! This position focuses on the skilled operation of construction and maintenance equipment while supporting a variety of manual labor tasks on roadway and bridge crews. The work contributes to safe travel conditions and effective maintenance operations.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee Program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or Graduation from a Commercial Driver’s License Training School; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License or equivalent with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed.
  • The E restriction must be removed from the driver's license.
  • Possession of an active Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
  • Ability to demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
  • Must pass a background investigation.

Nice To Haves

  • All permanent employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders, and two additional pieces of construction equipment, within the probationary period.
  • All employees must obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.
  • Employees may be required to obtain additional certifications issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on assigned pieces of equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate trucks, loaders, snowplows, and other assigned equipment during maintenance and winter activities
  • Perform flagging duties to manage traffic flow when not operating equipment
  • Use motorized and non-motorized tools to complete tasks such as repairing structures, cutting brush, and maintaining roadway assets
  • Make field adjustments, perform minor repairs, and assist mechanics to keep equipment in safe working condition
  • Follow all safety procedures, monitor work areas, and report injuries or incidents immediately
  • Apply required environmental protection practices and fulfill training responsibilities for this title
