About The Position

The PennDOT CDL Operator A position with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) gives you the chance to utilize important equipment that keeps highways and bridges in good condition. You will collaborate with highway crews, assist with roadway repairs, and support daily maintenance activities. This role helps you develop strong skills through hands-on work in the field. This position supports highway and bridge maintenance by operating equipment, handling manual labor tasks, and assisting crew operations. The role helps maintain roadway safety by responding to seasonal needs and daily maintenance conditions.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration) Program
  • Graduation from a Commercial Driver’s License Training School
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training
  • Possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License or equivalent with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed
  • Possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations
  • Ability to perform essential job functions

Nice To Haves

  • All permanent employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders, and two additional pieces of construction equipment, within the probationary period.
  • All employees must obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.
  • Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate trucks, loaders, and other required machinery for maintenance work
  • Maintain required CDL credentials and complete daily operational checks
  • Perform flagging duties to guide traffic when equipment is not being operated
  • Use tools to complete tasks such as cleaning culverts, cutting brush, and repairing barriers
  • Make field adjustments, perform minor repairs, and assist mechanics with equipment
  • Follow safety procedures, observe hazards, report accidents, and use protective gear
  • Implement environmental protection requirements for maintenance activities
