About The Position

The Driver is responsible for safely transporting exterior building products to various customer jobsites. This role requires excellent driving skills, adherence to traffic laws, excellent communication, and a commitment to providing outstanding customer service. The driver may be required to stay beyond their scheduled time to help pull orders for delivery for the following day. Drivers will read work orders / invoices to determine product needs for customer pick-up or delivery. Drivers will frequently lift and carry building materials product by hand weighing up to 100 pounds. Drivers will operate a forklift to load a customer’s vehicle, load an Erie Materials delivery truck, unload a vendor truck, move product in stock, etc. Drivers will work in the warehouse, as needed, to put away returns, stock bays, clean warehouse areas, and help walk-in customers by providing them with their recently purchased product. Drivers will appropriately receive and check in product. Additional responsibilities may be assigned.

Requirements

  • Valid New York State Commercial Class A or B driver license with a clean driving record.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent knowledge of and adherence to traffic laws and road safety regulations.
  • Ability to interpret and operate GPS and other navigation tools.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Ability to lift and carry building materials product by hand weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to pass a DOT physical and DOT drug screening.
  • Ability to meet FMCSA Vision requirements (20/40 vision in each eye with or without correction, 70-degree field of vision, ability to recognize red, green, and amber traffic lights; alternative certification may be needed if standard is not met).
  • Ability to meet FMCSA Hearing requirements (ability to perceive a forced whispered voice at not less than five feet in the better ear, or average hearing loss not greater than 40 decibels at 500Hz, 1000Hz, and 2,000 Hz).
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Strong basic math skills (add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure).
  • Have an Air Brakes endorsement.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of 1 year of professional driving experience.
  • Knowledge of building materials product.
  • Forklift and/or Moffett experience.
  • Have a Hazardous Materials (HazMat) endorsement or must obtain it within the first 3 months of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate company vehicles to transport and pick up building materials product at designated locations.
  • Adhere to all traffic laws, regulations, and company policies.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle to ensure safety and report any issues.
  • Maintain a clean and well-organized vehicle interior.
  • Use (POD) proof of delivery to take pictures of the job site prior to making a delivery, including pictures of the product delivered and the location if delivery is on pavement. A customer waiver consent form is required if the area looks questionable.
  • Communicate and work effectively with customers, dispatchers, management and other employees.
  • Generate advance communication via text or phone call to the customer regarding product delivery.
  • Follow delivery routes and schedules accurately and promptly.
  • Load product onto the truck for designated deliveries, potentially making multiple trips from the branch.
  • Complete necessary paperwork and maintain accurate trip records.
  • Respond to emergencies or unexpected situations calmly and efficiently, including contacting the department manager.
  • Safely drive the delivery vehicle to the customer jobsite and unload product, usually unassisted, ensuring product protection from inclement weather.
  • Read work orders / invoices to determine product needs for customer pick-up or delivery.
  • Frequently lift and carry building materials product by hand weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Operate a forklift to load customer vehicles, Erie Materials delivery trucks, unload vendor trucks, and move product in stock.
  • Work in the warehouse as needed for returns, stocking, cleaning, and assisting walk-in customers.
  • Appropriately receive and check in product.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.
