CDL Class A Instructor Trainer
About The Position
160 Driving Academy is the largest CDL training school in the country, with a significant presence across the United States. As a CDL Class A Instructor Trainer, you will be responsible for teaching students all aspects of CDL training, from initial inspections to passing their final exams. This role involves hands-on instruction in both yard settings and behind the wheel. You will be based at a specific training yard and work with a team of instructors, reporting to a Lead Instructor. Occasional travel to other regional yards may be required, with per diem and mileage reimbursement provided if using a personal vehicle. The role emphasizes a commitment to keeping the training yard clean and presentable. This position is ideal for experienced Class A drivers seeking a stable, local role that allows them to stay home nightly and be compensated for impactful training outcomes.
Requirements
- Must reside in the state you are applying for or have a residence secured for relocation.
- Valid CDL Class A license with a minimum of 24 months of verifiable tractor-trailer driving experience.
- Safe driving record and ability to pass DOT physical and drug and alcohol screening.
- Strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to mentor students.
- Basic computer skills to track student progress and scheduling.
Nice To Haves
- Experience in mentoring, coaching, or training drivers.
- Driver Training Instructor certification (if required by the state, we provide guidance and support to obtain certification).
- Knowledge of FMCSA and state regulations related to CDL training and testing.
- Ability to adapt instruction for different learning styles.
Responsibilities
- Teach Class A driving skills using hands-on training in outdoor yards on automatic and manual transmissions.
- Guide students step-by-step through pre-trip inspections, yard maneuvers, and on-road driving.
- Prepare students to pass CDL testing standards on the first attempt.
- Track student attendance and progress; provide additional support when needed.
- Maintain accurate training records, evaluations, and documentation.
- Reporting of all incidents and accidents to your lead and corporate in a timely manner.
- Work closely with fellow instructors and your Lead Instructor to deliver a consistent student experience and follow our defined curriculum.
- Help keep the yard and building clean and presentable.
- Cover for other instructors at nearby regional yards in certain emergencies.
- Assist with the transfer of trucks to repair operations and neighboring yards for use.
- Student-centric approach to teaching with ability to exhibit patience and professionalism.
- Ability to climb in/out of a tractor cab, sit and stand for extended periods, and demonstrate maneuvers.
