About The Position

The CCU Residency Program is a fourteen-week program designed for registered nurses to gain specialized skills in critical care. Upon successful completion, participants will transition to a permanent staff RN position within the CCU. The program emphasizes direct patient care, nursing assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, evaluation, and care coordination. It operates under the rules and regulations of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing and adheres to agency policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines, and standards of practice. The program requires a 40-hour weekly commitment, including 8 hours of classroom time and 32 hours of hands-on patient care, with varied hours to maximize learning opportunities. Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with an Associate’s degree or Baccalaureate degree in nursing (BSN).
  • BSN preferred. Candidates without a BSN must enroll in a Baccalaureate program within one year of hire and complete it by the fourth anniversary of employment.
  • Current RN licensure in the state of MA in good standing.
  • Current basic life support (BLS) certification.
  • Basic computer proficiency.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • Organizational skills.
  • Analytical ability to solve clinical nursing issues.
  • Ability to effectively delegate appropriate patient care activities.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Physical ability to meet core job responsibilities.
  • Ability to effectively manage stress.
  • At least 2 years of nursing experience.
  • Telemetry experience preferred.
  • Provide a short, written summary (500 words) relating to why they want to pursue critical care nursing.
  • Must be vaccinated against COVID-19 and flu, and receive a booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Nice To Haves

  • BSN degree.
  • Multilingual skills (beyond English) in languages appropriate to patient populations served.
  • Relevant clinical experience and/or specialty certification for certain practice areas (e.g., enterstomal therapy, epidemiology, peri-operative areas).
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (some units may require).

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care, including nursing assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, evaluation, and coordination of care.
  • Adhere to the rules and regulations of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
  • Utilize the model of care designed by the nursing department and follow established agency policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines, and standards of practice.
  • Participate in clinical, educational, quality, and fiscal patient care outcomes.
  • Access, enter, and interpret computerized data/information.
  • Communicate effectively with members of the health care team, patients, and families.
  • Set priorities and efficiently complete assigned work.
  • Conduct quality improvement research utilization projects.
  • Effectively delegate appropriate patient care activities.
  • Manage stress effectively.
  • Complete 8 hours of dedicated classroom time weekly.
  • Complete 32 hours of hands-on patient care weekly.
