About The Position

The Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (CIS), with a focus on patient safety, is required to function within the parameters of the legal scope of practice and in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, rules, regulations, and policies, procedures, and guidelines of the employing health care institution or practice setting. The CIS functions under their own education, licensure, and/or certification and assumes accountability and responsibility for the quality of care provided to patients and their families according to the standards of practice. The CIS demonstrates responsibility for continued competence in practice and develops insight through reflection, self-analysis, self-care, and lifelong learning. The CIS completes a wide variety of duties on a day-to-day basis, working regularly with many members of a health care team, including physicians, surgeons, and nurses. They also work closely with patients of all ages who experience heart-related conditions and complications. The CIS practices technology founded upon theoretical knowledge and concepts, uses equipment and accessories consistent with the purposes for which they were designed, and employs procedures and techniques appropriately. They assess situations, exercise care, discretion, and judgment, assume responsibility for professional decisions, and act in the best interest of the patient. The CIS acts as an agent through observation and communication to obtain pertinent information for the physician to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of the patient, recognizing that interpretation and diagnosis are outside the scope of practice for the profession. They use equipment and accessories, employ techniques and procedures, and perform services in accordance with an accepted standard of practice, demonstrating expertise in minimizing radiation exposure to the patient, self, and other members of the healthcare team. The CIS prepares patients and equipment for cardiac, endovascular/vascular, electrophysiology, and/or cardiothoracic related diagnostic and interventional procedures. They assist in performing common interventions including management of stents, catheters, balloons, intravascular ultrasound, balloon pump, ventricular assist devices, fluoroscopy, and imaging systems. The CIS possesses knowledge and ability to apply complex invasive cardiac, vascular, and cardiothoracic principles, instrumentation, and techniques for both minimally invasive and open procedures. They have knowledge of cardiovascular and cardiothoracic anatomy and physiology. The CIS performs pre- and post-procedure monitoring and answers patient(s) and family member(s) related questions regarding their care.

Requirements

• A graduate of a certified or degree granting program or post-secondary educational program in a health science related non-nursing field which may include, but is not limited to one of the following: Cardiovascular Technology, Ultrasound, Respiratory Therapy, Paramedic/EMT
• Other allied health professional degrees or certifications may be considered but not guaranteed
• Stand, walk, stoop, reach, see, speak and hear.
• Lifting is limited to 35 lbs. for clinical staff.
• Must use an assisted-lift device or get another individual(s) to assist with the lift that is over the maximum limits.

Nice To Haves

• Preferred to actively pursue Cardiovascular (CV) certification/registry while employed.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred within 6 months.
• Required to complete six (6) hours of hospital provided continuing education upon hire and annually for Advanced Sterile Processing Certification. Education will focus on the standards of practice in instrument decontamination, transportation, and reprocessing.
• CIS deemed competent to reprocess transesophageal echocardiogram probes will be required to complete one (1) additional hour of annual education and competency evaluation as part of this process.
