The Cath Lab Tech (RCES) performs the duties of a cardiac technologist, specializing in invasive cardiac and peripheral vascular diagnostic and interventional procedures, as well as electrophysiology procedures. This role involves using sophisticated imaging, hemodynamic monitoring, and recording equipment to assess and treat cardiac and peripheral vascular disease. The technologist acts as a record keeper, monitoring, recording, and analyzing the patient's electrocardiogram (EKG) and intracardiac pressures. They assist the medical team with sterile procedures, operate X-ray and other laboratory equipment, run blood samples, and obtain sterile supplies. The position requires the ability to work with patients of all ages, from newborns to geriatrics. A key focus is on electrophysiology (EP) procedures, related protocols, and technological devices such as pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs), and biventricular pacemakers (BiV). The technologist is expected to ensure the highest quality of care for patients with rhythm disturbances, providing advanced care for cardiac arrhythmias and conduction disorders. They must possess expertise in understanding pharmacologic options for treatment, special protocols for conscious sedation patients, and a thorough knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology, hemodynamic principles, X-Ray techniques, and emergent and routine cardiac care. Continuous self-education and staff updates regarding EP protocols are also required.
